I'll soon be joining you in this , er, lottery. I have only about 300 built models to pack up, and the journey from Arnhem to Edinburgh is nowhere near as far as you have to do, but OTOH they're 80% biplanes. Most have drag wires and odd nobbly bits that would make stacking them vertically seriously challenging. Another problem is that I won't be able to take them in the car. Last time, the move was just 120 km and I brought them myself over a few weeks. This time, the dog and humans go in the car, everything else gets entrusted to the tender food blender mercies of an international moving company. Interesting times............

Best of luck.

Paul.

On the whole, I've found international moving companies quite good - better than national ones!

Good luck with the move!

Cheers

Andrew

When packing my kits esp aircraft for a show I always store them in a box filled with fibre. Those stuff you find your your pillow filled with. I found a store in Munich selling this stuff for quite a good price. I just drop a layer of about 3 to 5 inch at the bottom of the box and then lay the planes onto this - thats it. Never had any broken small parts with this method.

I wish you luck with the move Ralph!

Thanks guys. And Beany thanks for the tip. I'll be using that on my lancaster and big P-40

This is a very interesting thread if only to discover how many of our group are 'on the move'. Andrew: that vertical stack idea looks brilliant. First time I've seen it.

It's just styrofoam in two strips down the box, with slices taken out to put the wings of the planes in. It works well with monoplanes!

I like Beany's idea of the box in the box for bigger planes.

"It's just..." of course it's a simple idea Andrew, that's what makes it brilliant! I think it would work just as well with most biplanes too...just cut a squared chunk instead of a slice.

The most impressive and effective method of transporting models that I've seen, involved custom-made cardboard and polystyrene blocks. Whilst this is good for one or two 'Special' preciousses, it would become problematic when you have 500-600 of the things!

Regards,
Bruce

For bulk packing, I'd suggest flattish boxes with small polystyrene chips. Moving large collections is always going to be a problem, and very time consuming to pack. I was lucky that my collection at the time was small.

Cheers

Andrew

To piggy-back on malepo's suggestion, I have friend who uses Easter-basket 'grass' -- seems to work well for him.

And biplanes will stack vertically, recognizing they might lean a bit depending on the stagger. You do need be concerned about movement in the 'slot' such that control horns and control wires aren't knocked off ....

That seems to be a great suggestion. I like that one

All packed.

Some damage already.

The models (and all our other stuff) are going into a packing cube which will be hauled by flat-bed truck across the country. I may take the boxes that have the preciousest of the precious in the car with me.

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr........

Just stick each kit in a plastic bag then throw it in the box, at the end of the move you have a large stack of unbuilt kits in plastic bags to re build or to sell on Ebay :-D
