Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Many thanks for your further comments and views boys. I think Darryl has hit the nail on the head in that some of these modern kits have certainly moved far on from the oldies that I often build and are not really compatible with the more traditional whack it together and fill approach I would agree that there is little or no "wiggle" room with this kit but I do feel that it could have been simplified a little to ease construction without necessarily sacrificing detail. Looking at it on the bench though, there is no denying in my mind that the model looks considerably nicer than a lot of the oldies and, hopefully, those looks will not be spoiled by my painting!
@Blueberry - you'll be fine if you take your time with it and, in fact, I would say that this kit almost demands that the builder takes their time. I don't mind lengthy builds per se and I struggle more with attempting multiple builds of simpler kits as that approach doesn't work for me although others, such as Andrew R, make it look a doddle

Substitute "muddle" for "doddle" on the multiple builds approach. I keep forgetting where I put bits and pieces.ShaunW wrote: I struggle more with attempting multiple builds of simpler kits as that approach doesn't work for me although others, such as Andrew R, make it look a doddle

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Enjoying the Lanc build very much as I have two to build in the stash (that might be three actually, I can't be certain )
I will keep an eye out each time I get to one of the stages where you have had a spot of bother; thanks for the forewarning!

You're going great guns there Shaun - its very interesting to see the issues you are having. I'm looking forward to cracking on with mine to see if Ihit the same things.
Despite the issues it's looking great!

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Thanks boys. It would be nice to say that I've made a lot of further progress on this build during the week but it's been too hot so instead I've been enjoying the sun of an evening with the Mrs, sitting out and drinking some cold ones I'll get back in front of the bench at the weekend!

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Oh dear, I haven't been very active on the bench this last two weeks or so, largely because of the great summer weather, which has tempted me to sit out of an evening. But now there has been a burst of activity (yes, it's now dull and raining ) and I've started to get some paint on. The undersides and fuselage sides are now done:
This is my version of "Night", which initially started as an application of straight matt black, which was then followed with applications of progressively lighter NATO Black to try and get a bit of light and shade into the monotone scheme. The effect is quite subtle, perhaps too subtle All paint is Tamiya acrylic, applied by airbrush. Currently I am applying the yards of Tamiya masking tape required to mask up for the camo colours and I hope to get those colours sorted before the weekend.
Thanks for looking.

You are giving the good fight, Shaun. And I like your colo(u)r a lot.

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Nato Black is definitely the way to go Shaun. It looks great on the Lanc and is really bringing up the detail. After the fight you've had so far this is a terrific vindication of the effort involved.

Looking good

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Two shades of black seems to be fine.
On my "Black Cat", I've added a third shades with 9 parts of black and 1 of deep blue, very diluted and sprayed on the edge of the wings.
But i believe that this not a model for paint-experiment, you have achieved a good result with only two tones.

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Many thanks for your kind words everyone. Straight black just looked too black (although the emo kids would probably disagree as black is like totally goth, man) and, as many of you are no doubt aware, a glance at any photos of in-service black painted aircraft usually shows them to be in fact a multitude of shades ranging from black to grey. I'm not usually one for weathering aircraft but thought I would give it a bit of a go on this one. Lancs quickly show exhaust staining for instance. That should be a laugh then. How many times will I have to re-paint? Bet you my bottle goes and I finish it with no stains

Re: Shaun's Bodging Bench
Good to see you back on with this Shaun, I have a couple of all black kits to do and was looking to do the same as you have here.
