Mr. John's stateside modeling bench.

Post by johnsan »

Ok. Relocated to Ohio. I can no longer see Fuji-san from the modeling bench, only the neighbor's back lawn. Seems only appropriate to close the Plamo Factory and start a new thread.

My stuff - furniture, appliances, models, supplies, and so on won't be here for another month. So I can't really do any modeling. Heck, I even forgot to pack any cement.

On a positive note, the Air Force Museum is only a few miles from my house. Cool place.

I expect I'll be going there frequently and there may be a few photos from there posted here down the road.
Really nothing pithy to say.

Maybe a could idea to get one of those starter kits with glue and paint included  Glad to hear you've made it across the Pacific and look forward to you resuming your excellent builds.

Yes. I'm agree with Paul: Photos!
Sometimes the talent consists exactly in that: try five dozen times when others stop at three dozen...! (F.Labelle)
I think that modeling is a subtle mix of zen philosophy and absolute crazyness - but in my case I would not dare to specify the respective percentage of each......

Thanks for the welcome back.

It's too early to say the move has gone well. We have yet to see our furniture and other belongings. I start my new job in a week. My wife started hers the beginning of this month. We have a place to live, a car, and have most of the paperwork/registrations done. We'll see how it goes.

Ohio is green and pretty, but it lacks the exotic I've become accustomed to.

I am excited about the museum. Sadly, the lighting is horrible there and the ceilings are painted black. This does make for some dramatic photographs, but you have to really work the camera to get them to turn out. All the shots I've taken so far are handheld with no flash. I doubt they'll let me bring my lights, stands, reflectors, and tripod. I'll see what I can do. If anyone wants shots of particular aircraft, let me know. I'll take what I can. Just be aware the displays are well designed for walkarounds or detail photos.

But there are opportunities for some interesting stuff. Like this 1909 Bleriot flyer built by a local Dayton guy from a kit way back when.

It's hanging from the ceiling, so only the underside is available. Interesting still, though. As it was built from a kit, I guess you could say it's a model. Albeit a 1 to 1 scale model. Cool, though. No?

Glad to hear that you made it back to the States John and hopefully you will settle in your new home. The Bleriot is a hell of a kit in 1:1 scale, bet it was easier to rig than a 1/72nd scale jobbie

Glad you are back with us ... Remember the gift shop at the museum has model kits  although I have to admit it's been 20 years since I've been so maybe it changed .... back then it was Wright-Pat, then the USAF took it over, that's when the lighting went down hill ...

Thanks for the reminder, John. I saw kits in the shop, but to be honest I was more impressed with the book selection.

Welcome, Johnsan! ...or should I say Johnsir now?

Must be great to be near the USAF Museum! ...and if you are interested I think there was some company which does large scale models (Airdrome?) which had a 1:1 scale Bleriot, if I am not mistaken...

Cheers!

Good to see you online again!
I spent 2 days at that Museum many years ago, and it was really a 3-day job.

Thanks for the warm welcome back, guys.

Gotta admit I'm going through some culture shock. I just not used to people talking to me and understanding what they're saying. I've had to ask them to repeat because I'm sort of not paying any attention.

Marek - I haven't been to WI for quite some time. If, when I do head that way again I'll be sure to look you up.
