Re: Tales from the Basement Lab by AndrewR
I initially thought the IP decals in the Bf 190E, Spit Mk I and the Lancaster new tools were a little too bright but once installed into their respective cockpits they ended up looking better than I expected, especially in the cramped '109 and Spit cockpits.

Having assembled it, I think you may be right,Shaun.
Glue the front end of the fuselage together and then glue that on the wings.
Squeezing the fuselage top to bottom pushes the sides out a bit, and ensures the wing roots gap is minimized.

Then run glue down the inside of the upper fuselage joint, and glue the tail underside on.
As you can see, I'm going to need a touch of filler at the rear wing roots, but pretty minimal really.

Underneath looks pretty good at the back. But there's a teeny step at the front.
Nothing too bad though

All the remaining main items are now on the fuselage. The air intakes are not bad to fit, but might need a bit of filler. Whoever decided that putting part C1 in the undercarriage bay after the wings were assembled should be made to sit down and assemble them a few hundred times.
Anyhow we are now ready for a swipe of filler in a few places.

Very good tutorial developing here Andrew. A pity I just finished mine.
I share your pain about part C1. What were Airfix thinking?
The small step at the front fuselage to wing join is caused I think by parts A5 & A6 sitting too high. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
If I build another I would sand them down a little and fit part C1 at that stage of the build.
I agree though that none of these issues are a show stopper. Just a little annoying with a new tool kit.

I was struck by the problems you and Paul were having in the GB, so it seemed like a good idea to have a go!Old_Tonto wrote:Very good tutorial developing here Andrew. A pity I just finished mine.

Here are the offending pieces mentioned by OT, the undercarriage bay side walls:
The problem comes down to all that nice, but invisible, detail in the wheel bay. Next time, I'm going to omit it altogether.
I forgot to mention yesterday, I just push fitted the wheels up undercarriage doors in place for painting.

The Hurricane is now in the paint shop, having had a bit of filler applied.
Meanwhile, the Airfix Vampire T.11 comes out of the paint shop.
I'm enjoying this build. I do regret not painting the orange stripes before putting the aluminium down.

I absolutely adore the real batplane (Vampire). Impressive finish on it.

There are a few visible greeblies but it's not too bad.
So, the Auster base has had a second coat of white, the Hurricane has had primer sprayed on top.
So the plan today is to make some progress on the T.11 and start the next project:
Airfix Eurofighter Typhoon What - If.
Rather dated, so not representative of current service versions. The Revell kit is, by all accounts, much better, but this is the Unofficial Airfix Forum, so "Full ahead, and damn the torpedoes".
I will try and dress up the cockpit a bit with an Eduard Zoom set intended for the Revell kit. This will need a bit of tweaking, but that's what we're here for
The nastiest problem will be an evil step at the jet intakes. I will attempt to deal with that before getting onto assembly. The tub, stick and IP are in the paint shop being primed. The seat will need a wee bit of reshaping to use the Zoom photoetch.

Re: Tales from the Basement Lab by AndrewR
Good progress on the Vampire T.11 this afternoon. There was a slight delay while I looked for a missing part which was safely on the sprue
The drop tanks, which I forgot about, are together and need priming.
The undercarriage is assembled, apart from the very delicate looking outer doors, which I intend to leave until after decal lung is done.
The canopy framing has been done with the silver Sharpie marker. Much easier than masking, or even freehand painting.
Ready for decals.

Re: Tales from the Basement Lab by AndrewR
The Eurofighter build will be detailed fully here:
http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=11877;
Here are a few edited highlights "Scratch of the Day"
The jet intakes are a known problem
Part 28 sits proud of the rest of the underside, so this needs the most extensive modification.
The splitter, part 29 is completely the wrong size and shape and needs replacing entirely.
The base plate, part 27 does not blend into the fuselage properly.
But with some careful sanding, replacing the splitter plate, and reducing the height of part 28 by 0.5 mm, we can improve things no end.
I also started to modify the seat, so that the Zoom set can be applied.

Re: Tales from the Basement Lab by AndrewR
Good work with the Hurri, Andrew - I, too, am not much impressed by Airfix's over-engineering in places. And, as you so rightly point out, that part C1 is just a stupid mistake, pure and simple..... Still, the surface detail is quite impressive, provided you haven't had to sand most of it off curing seam issues....!
