Re: An Old Airfix Boston
Looking good Andrew! Nice work on the engines. I too found the 'pose-able' control surfaces to be a bit too gappy so I ran a bead of PVA along the hinge lines to plug them up.
My ones up now, here: http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10255;
it will make you realise what a good job you're doing of yours!

Re: An Old Airfix Boston
A burst of activity today. Fuselage glued together and wings and tailplanes added.
The fit was not too bad considering the age of the kit.
It's going to be wheels up on the stand.
I have not started painting the crew yet. The kit figures are unusable, being far too big.
With the Biggles Spur.
cheers

Hold that thought until you've added the glazing.....AndrewR wrote:The fit was not too bad considering the age of the kit.

Like buses, they arrive in threes.ShaunW wrote:The old Airfix Boston is enjoying something of a renaissance on the forum and here's another one seeing sound progress!
Two coats on the undersides now.
Still lots of smoothing to do!
cheers

Re: An Old Airfix Boston
Duck egg green from Vallejo Air.
I will be using vinyl masks to create the MQ-D letters in medium sea grey. The grey is painted on in the right places. Hope the masks fit!
And two coats of Dark Earth and Dark Green on too!
I will apply those masks tomorrow.
cheers

Looking good Andrew, the paint looks to have gone on very smooth and consistent. Vinyl masks eh? Interesting, I've never seen those used before.

We'll see a bit later - I applied and painted over them this morning!Zee28 wrote:Looking good Andrew, the paint looks to have gone on very smooth and consistent. Vinyl masks eh? Interesting, I've never seen those used before.

But first I used Vallejo English Uniform to get a nicer shade of brown
So then on with the masks. I painted satin varnish over them first, so try and seal up any gaps - given the surface has rivets everywhere.
The moment of truth will happen once I've had a cup of tea

That looks really good Andrew! Those masks have worked rather well, I might have to look into them. I think this is going to be considerably better than my effort with the same kit. Looking forward to this!

Re: An Old Airfix Boston
The paint finish isn't as good as I would like, but given that I'm not using the airbrush, that's okay. Underneath is a bit of a mess, but it won't be seen, even with the plane on a stand. Now I have to paint the figures, props and canopy frames. :Zee28 wrote:That looks really good Andrew! Those masks have worked rather well, I might have to look into them. These particular masks are not easy to get, as they are out of production, but if you want a set, I can ask at my LMS - they were one of the agents and seem to be carrying quite a good stock of the codes in various sizes.
Here is the website - it is defunct so don't try ordering through it! http://www.ezmasks.com/markings.html;
You could do the same thing by getting generic letters as decals, although the masks can be used to generate any colour of lettering, so they are easier to use. They also look better than decals in my opinion. I think if I was going to do a large scale model, these would be very handy.
cheers
