Airfix Short Skyvan

Post by shangos70 »

Another completion for Telford. probably my quickest build of the year. I really wanted to do the Omani version after reading about them in action in the early 70's but the early boxings were hard to come by as were decent decals.
Many thanks to forum member Marky for providing new decals after I ruined the tail fin ones.
Anyhow, Short Skyvan of Olympic Airlines 1974.

Superb! A bit of an odd subject for Airfix one of those oddities that Matchbox often went for.

That is delightful shangos, really lovely. Excellent tidy finish, nicely executed. As James says it was from the days when CBK companies weren't afraid of tooling up for something a bit different and out of the ordinary. And it's thanks to them that we can model such subjects.

I wonder if Airfix are considering this one for re-release with updated decals? I'd buy it!

Nice work shangos!

I'd certainly like to see it rereleased...I always thought it was quite cool when it was first released, kinda like a baby C-130 (which I could never afford in the 70s)...

Lovely Shane. That is spot on and, all being well, I'll be able to see it in the flesh at SMW 8-)

Nice to see one of these built. I have a Skyvan in my stash which I think owns the record for the longest unbuilt kit in my possession - it was given to me as a 19th birthday present - in 1977:)

Eric, that HAS to be a record! Can anyone here beat that? Can anyone beat 37 years in the stash? :-D

I've always fancied this kit and shangos superb build makes me want one even more. It looks cracking mate!

Many thanks all for the kind words. It definitely makes a change from all the warbirds in the cabinet.
I decided to leave the seating out in the back as it can't be seen anyway. I added 15grm in tyre weights behind the bulkhead but still doesn't take much to sit on its bum. I didn't sand down any of the rivet detail but this makes it harder to get a flush paint demarcation for the cheatlines. I had used thinned Hu15 enamel gloss applied over 4 coats and some seeped under the tape. Difficult touch up with white because that came from a rattlecan of Hu 22. The canopy frames were awkward to mask because of the various shapes, I used some Mr Colour liquid mask in the corners to seal it. This stuff sticks like the proverbial and needed scratching off with a cocktail stick. I used toothpaste to polish up the screen before brushing on Klear.
I was undecided about the nose colour, I had seen some with silver ones and others as the box art in white. In the end I went with the box art.

Sorry Mr Zee, I am not normally one who goes for records but I do have some kits in the roof which I bought in the early 1970's. I know of some which I bought in 1974 in Malta because they were then not available in the UK, but they are not the oldest. 30+ years away from the hobby means that they have been waiting for a long time…...
