Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 - Airfix 1/72
Like the MiG-15, this is one of those new Airfix kits that's cheap and a joy to build...
Box contents...
Closeup on sprues. You can't see it but the wheels have flatspots and bulges. Not everyone likes the deep panel lines, but I do. The rudder is a separate part and can be easily moved left/right, and the flaps are down as default (to do them up, you just snip off the little locating lugs). 3-part canopy again offers you the open/closed option, and the engine cover is a separate part with a visible engine underneath. Not a terribly detailed engines, but overall not a bad set of options in 1/72. Just the one set of decals, for Franz von Werra, II/JG3 in France, 1940. Would be nice to have options but hey ho. I daresay there's plenty of Aftermarket for those who want it.
(just realised how blurred this is, ah well - too late now)
An afternoon's work gets you here:
Cockpit is good, though the IP decal is miles bigger than the part...
A couple more hours, and just out of undercoating. I have not used a drop of filler so far.
Wheels on, one leg a bit wobbly so taped to keep it in place.
And the overall paint job is sketched out. Might not be the right colours (the "Aircraft Blue" stated looks a lot bluer than the light grey on the box) but basically I was on a roll and didn't care too much as long as it was vaguely in the right area. Edges need some touching up and so on, but it's getting there.
Another cracking little kit so far, my only slight gripe has been that the sprue gates are a bit big, especially on some of the smaller parts. I broke *both* tailplane struts while trying to shave/trim/sand off the sprue gate residue... But bonus points because the tailplane struts have specially constructed sockets on the fuselage. that mean they fit only one way round, it's impossible to get them backwards or upside down, and will naturally find the socket on the plane. Similarly, the tailplane pieces have an extra locating pin/hole right at the front to make it impossible for them to be out of alignment. Really well thought-out piece of kit.

I have found another problem, I think: There's no decal diagram. The paint guide on the back shows where the big stuff goes, but no info on what to do with the stencils...

I had the same problem and solved it differently.

Thanks for that. All transfers now transferred, kit weathered, kibbles & bits attached and awaiting matt coat and ariel wire.
That oversight apart, a pleasure to build. If I can get my camera near some natural light, I'll take a photo. In the meantime, I'm so chuffed with how it's come out that I'm thinking a base and some figures would set it off nicely.

That's a smart idea with the reversed tape!

I agree with you, I like the small Airfix kits, both new and old tooling.
And your 109 is coming out great.

Right, daylight and me being home finally coincided, so here are some photos. I've got a couple more figures to get on the base, but they're still in the paintshop...

I don't know if I'd dignify it with the term "Diorama" but I tend to think that putting an a/c on a base and adding a couple of figures really does bring it to life and give it some scale.
