The Altair was a development from the Lockheed Sirius. It lays claims to be one of the first aircraft with a fully retractable undercarriage. Although built mainly for private and commercial use, some were used as military transports for staff including one by the US Navy as the Secretary of the Navy's personal transport.
The model began as a Merlin 1/72 kit of the Lockheed Orion. Work was done to convert it to the Altair. That was probably about 30 years ago. It was donated to me in a partly built but somewhat derelict condition. The first photo shows 'before'.
I stripped off all the paint and repainted it - the blue is the same as on the original model, but shows up darker on the photos. Strong sinlight seems to have caused the difference. It needed undercarriage so I scratch built some legs, doors etc.. I also carved out wheel wells, a job that was rather difficult as the wings were in one solid piece and made of something uncertain. It certainly wasn't normal injection moulded plastic. I moulded a new canopy and added other bits as needed.
If nothing else, it's different!
