Fokker DR.1
Flown by Manfred Von Richthofen, March 1918
Hi everyone,
Hope you like my little Fokker DR.1. Appreciate any criticism on my skills with the fine EZ line thread that I used. I think it looks ok inbetween the wings and undercarriage but maybe a bit thick on the cables at the rear? I realised later on that the tighter you pull the thread the thinner it gets of course but it was too late. Maybe invisible thread for those sort of cables next time? I’m not sure.
As usual the model was brush painted using Humbrol enamels and varnishes. For the final finish I thinned the matt cote with white spirit so it ended up with a slight sheen which I felt suited the model.
Thanks for looking
Stu

Very tidy!
Best wishes

Lovely job, really eye-catching. Splendid job on the cylinders and inside the cockpit.
Would it look better or worse with a slighter darker wash along the ailerons and flaps lines? It's so small that it hardly seems worth the effort, but it might be worth a try.

That's a very nice rendition. Rigging looks fine to me.

Beautiful job on what is not necessarily a gem of a kit. You've made it come up sparkling.
I agree with your assessment on the control lines being a bit too thick - for that reason I always use monofilament for control lines when using EZ line for rigging.

That is a great looking Dr1 Stu. My experience of rigging is quite limited seeing as most of my builds tend to be post war jet aircraft. I've only used stretched sprue for the job apart from fine wire on a couple of 1/48th projects a number of years ago. In this scale and on a subject this small I think it is quite difficult to get the rigging thin enough to allow it to be workable and also still allowing it to be visible! I'd leave it, it looks good to me and IMHO it's better to have slightly out of scale rigging on a biplane/triplane than none at all.

Lovely clean build on a kit with some niggling fit issues, IIRC. And the rigging looks fine to me.

Re: Fokker DR.1, Revell, 1/72
Many thanks to all for the comments and feedback on the rigging. I think next time I may experiment with something else if I need to replicate any small cables. That said I am overall quite happy with how the kit turned out.
Thanks again!

Re: Fokker DR.1, Revell, 1/72
FWIW, I use 0.08mm fishing line for 1/72 rigging.. that scales up to approx 5.75mm in real life which seems about right for the scale (most WWI cables being between 3mm-6mm). Because it's non-elastic you get uniformity of thickness. You can go smaller, of course, but I find 0.08mm is about the limit for my twitchy hands and failing eyesight!Stupot wrote:Many thanks to all for the comments and feedback on the rigging. That is a superbly finished model, especially considering its age. You have made a fine rendition of the original. The rigging looks fine to me - others have made far better suggestions that I could so I will not comment further.
