BF 109 E-4, Airfix, 1/72

Post by Stupot »

BF 109E-4, 9./Jagdgeschwader 26, Caffiers, France, August 1940

Hi everyone,

This is Airfix’s old tool BF 109e. Overall a really enjoyable build and, although old, it builds fairly well. This model is from a later box and has a great decal sheet with a colourful paint scheme.

There were just a few things to sort out with the kit; firstly the canopy appeared to be too small and sat quite low so it had to be raised. Next the rivet detail on the wings was sanded off. Of course you don’t have to do this but I personally feel they look better without the rivets.

A scratch built instrument panel and some levers were added to the cockpit (there is an instrument decal in the kit but I wanted to make my own). I couldn’t get the pilot figure to fit satisfactorily but I painted him anyway and dropped him in the spares box for another time.

I struggled with the tail-plane as the struts seemed too short but I got it all looking ok in the end. In hindsight it would have been easier to fill the locating holes and remove the pins and attach the struts after everything else had been set in place.

Paint is Humbrol Enamel and Revel Aqua Color, the decals were sealed with klear and the final finish is Humbrol matt cote. The swastikas came from an xtradecal sheet.

This was a nice quick build for me and I’m really happy with it. That said I hope to be able to build the new kit soon, it will be interesting to compare them both.

That's a sweet looking build!

As you say, for an old tooling it scrubs up well!
Best wishes

Wow that really is a mini masterpiece. Beautifully finished - at first I thought that this was 1/32 scale. Many congratulations.

Very nice.

That particular tooling has little wrong with it. I built one in the 80s and still have it on my "ancient builds shelf".

Very neat job. Well finished. Like it a lot. Another new Airfix classic.

It may be a nice idea for a future GB, or even a theme for our CBK display. Old and New CBKs. The old kit and the replacement.
So many models, so little time.

Excellent work Stu, I love a classic yellow nose BoB scheme for an Emil. And you've used the old tool kit as well - I can't fault you for that!

Very attractive result!
Not much wrong with the old-tool kit. I have built one myself.

cheers,

Very good, and hard to tell from the new tool, to my non-expert eyes

Very nice! I built this one and, while I echo the sentiments of others that the old tool did not have too much wrong with it, mine did have huge gaps on the wing joins. If yours had the same one would never know! Great job :-D
