SU27 Flanker B
Hi everyone,
I think I bought this kit back in the 90’s and have often looked at the sprues in the box over the years. I always liked the box art and the bits in the box always looked impressively large for a fighter. Well eventually the kit made it to the bench and is now all finished and it is indeed large.
Overall it was quite easy to construct with just a couple of niggles. First I found that I needed to take care with the intake trunks as there isn’t much to help locate them securely and I ended up using superglue to fix them in place. Also, the fuselage joins top to bottom including the nose cone and I found this difficult to clean up around the nose and cockpit. I’m still not sure I got it completely tidy and I lost some of the raised detail during the filling and sanding.
Along with a scratchbuilt HUD to replace the kit part, I also added a few details to the cockpit which is quite visible through the large canopy. I decided not to add mirrors to the canopy frame but now I wish I had as I think they would have looked good.
The model was brush painted with humbrol enamels with the exception of the white nose, tail ends and missiles which were done with Citadel’s scar white. I’ll be the first to say that the camouflage colours are not quite right. They should be more light blue/grey than they actually are but I didn’t find it easy to match the colours. It doesn’t bother me that much but it’s something I’ll have to look into next time.
Still, I’m fairly happy with the model. The Flanker is an awesome machine to look at and the kit itself was enjoyable to build.
And here are the photos…

Superb job Stu! That's a great looking build and the paintwork looks fabulous!

Sweet looking. Great build.

As I'm refurbing an Airfix Flanker at the moment, I can confirm that those colours are a nightmare to match. Those look all right to me - top work, Stu!

Excellent work, Stu. The Flanker is indeed an impressive looking jet and you've really done a very good job of this one.

Re: SU27 Flanker B, Italeri, 1/72
I remember seeing one of these for the first time, I think in the mid 90's, it made an F-15 look a bit small!!. Didn't realise until then what a big beastie the Su-27 is.
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your comments.
I thought I might have to hang this one from the ceiling but I've just about managed to squeeze it into the display cabinet!
