Airfix 1/72, J26 (P-51D) Mustang

Post by Stupot »

J26 (P-51D) Mustang, Swedish Air Force, 1945

The P-51D is great looking machine and it’s easy to appreciate why it is a popular subject. Hard to believe then that this is my first ever Mustang though I’m sure it won’t be the last!
The kit is ok, it has a nice cockpit and is easy to build. I had a go at making some gun barrels and for the cockpit, I added a new gun sight and belts for the seat. (I saved the pilot for another project). The landing light was altered to improve its appearance by shortening it and drilling out the front side, filling the hole with pva.
The main painting was done with Humbrol enamels. Once the decals were on they were sealed with klear and two coats of thinned Matt Cote gave the model more of a dull satin finish. Then as a final touch some Winsor and Newton matt varnish was used on the walkways and antiglare panel.
The decals were ok and you get to make this machine or an RAF P-51K. (I fancy the RAF one next!). :)

Neat, clean build! And very nice (for a Swede…) to see it in the markings of the Swedish F16 wing of Uppsala.

The Mustangs (J 26 in Sw AF inventory) were delivered by American pilots, fresh from the air war over Germany, who naturally couldn't refrain from some extrovert showmanship. Among other antics, they played 'follow John' under the bridges in the centre of Stockholm…

Very nice Stu. I like the markings, and the landing light is a nice touch too.

Lovely NMF not too shiny, looks just right IMHO. Mind you I usually bottle it and do the camo option :)

It was really a bit of an experiment thinning the Matt Cote but I think it has turned out ok and I'm glad you like it too! :)
