Tamiya 1/48 Crusader

Post by Gadfly »

Hi,

Here is my Tamiya 1/48 Crusader.

Depicting a Crusader 1 of A squadron 6th RTR 7th Armoured Division Operation 'Crusader' Nov-Dec 1941.

I'm currently making a base for it but the main model is complete.

Is that one of their metal(heavy) hull kits ? It sits so nicely on the tracks, unlike a plastic hull. Good job !

Thanks for the kind words and positive feedback.

Yes the hull on this is die cast. The tracks are styrene link and length.

I began a base for it here is an image. Let me know what you think..

All of the Tamiya 1/48 kits feature styrene tracks, which are always going to be glued to the wheels (I would expect) -- so the metal hulls that Tamiya uses in these kits are completely useless.

It wouldn't be a problem (maybe) if the metal hulls featured exquisite detail -- but in fact, those that I have seen are very plain and simplistic, and (contrary to the claims on the box) detract from the kit's overall accuracy, rather than enhance it. Too bad if you need to add some detail that you can't glue on!

Fortunately, for the older kits, you can often obtain resin replacement hulls which provide the missing detail. Even better, the newer kits have abandoned the use of metal hulls, instead offering metal weights that can be placed inside the hull if (for some bizarre reason) you think the kit needs to be "heavier".

All of that aside ... great work, Gadfly!

Thanks for the kind words.

It's nearing completion I'll post up som further images once it's done.

The metal hull on the Crudader wasn't a problem for me.
