Splash's big & small MkV with stripes

Post by splash »

I have picked up a part started Airfix 1/24 MkI from my local charity shop and plan on building it and giving it back to the shop to sell on to make more money for the charity.

The original owner has part built the engine and splashed some black around the cockpit and broken the prop, for this build all panels will be stuck down so no engine is required and I have bought a resin set of Rotol blades and spinner.

The old decals are fit for the bin so I'm planning on making my own stencils for all the markings, this has freed up my choice of markings and has given me the chance to update the MkI to a MkV.

Being such a large kit will be a challenge to finish within the GB time span but I will give it my best.

Cracking idea, Al. I will follow this with interest (and it'd be good to know how much they make when they do sell it).

regards,

Hi splash, i be very interested to know how you make your stencils and what material do you use. I have often thought about making some, but really dont know where to start.

In the past I have used FRISK FILM, it's a low tack masking film that you can easily cut with a sharp knife. The beauty of FRISK is that being low tack it does not drag the paint off when you lift it. Being 1/24 the masks will be easier to make due to their bigger sizes.

The MkV that I intend to build is this one

The aircraft is from 302 Squadron, the white stripes were applied on July 4, 1942 for ”Operation Rutter”. This planned exercise of invasion beaches of Dieppe. This exercise was later carried out as ”Operation Jubilee”in August 1942.

I may have a set of Brownings for this kit in metal lying around somewhere. If I can find them would you like them?

Ok I have opened Pandora's box and it does not look to bad the previous owner has only part built the engine and slapped some black paint in all the wrong places

Tonight I will just lay down some interior green to give me a blank canvas to play with.

Half an hour later and I'm feeling much better.

For a large scale kit this is really basic the external detail is fine recessed lines, but it's missing all the detail in the wheel wells, having said that it's not a state of the art modern kit so what can I expect.

Have you noticed that the subject aeroplane has stripes on the top the tailplanes too?

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

I have the MPC release of that kit. KL*B is the only decal option. Moulded in Sand color. I have always liked that scheme with the nose striping. I read were the eagle Squadrons flew that mission but have never seen a photo of their Mk5's in the stripes.

Great idea in the charity line, Spalsh. Press on.

I hadn't until a couple of days ago when Paul gave me a link that had a colour drawing showing the tail stripes.

Thanks for pointing it out I would have easily missed it as none of the photos I have seen show it.
