Initial production, 19 Sqdn ** Finished **

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

Here's my kit, the new-tool Airfix .....

I'll be doing this as an initial production machine in 19 Sqn. The scheme is DE/DG over aluminum.
Interesting is that these machines carried 12in underwing serials.

I'm using the same Iliad sheet as K5083/August.

Good choice John. I love those massive early roundals.

The entire day went to a meeting and the aftermath ... I'll not get a chance to start until Monday and bench time will probably be sporadic through mid-month for various reasons ....

Finally, a sign of life ....

Image

I have primered it (Vallejo USN Light Ghost Grey Surface Primer) - not very exciting, I know, but a real accomplishment on my calendar. Since taken, sometime late Wednesday, I managed to get most all the interior and details painted also, so assembly should start soon .... In fact I'll be off to the workshop soon to do some touch-up ....

And here we are, a few days later.

Image

The cockpit is assembled and painted; I added seatbelts from the photo-etch pile. The fuselage interior is painted & washed. The wings are assembled, wheel wells painted & washed. And the prop. Gear is painted also.

Ready to start putting bigger pieces together. Going quite well, now that I've gotten started.

I have another I/IIa and a Ia - I should have started them at same time ....

I hope your example goes together a bit better than mine - I had issues with the cockpit fit on the two I built, one more so than the other.

I had a little issue on a test-fit, but found that if I widened the 2 slots each on 9a & 10A that are meant to fit over the stringer detail on the fuselage wall, then it was all OK. I did have to study the little cut-out drawing to get the right positioning - it is a tight fit front to back between the oxygen bottles and front former. From my experience, I would urge care in assembling the cockpit and not get too much paint anywhere.

Ready to close it up ....

Actually I did so, a while after this photo was taken, and put on the wing assembly. Doing some clean up of the fuselage joins.

It's actually a fun little kit .... providing I don't make a pig's ear out of the camo-job, I will have quite enjoyed it ...
