F331 - Fairey Gannet ** Completed **

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

OK, here I am with F331, the 1/72 Fairey Gannet and a sheet of Xtradecals for it.

Image

No I haven't started - only about 5 parts cam attached to the two (partial) sprues -- all the rest, and it is complete, were loose in the box ....

Image

Simple, but yellowed instructions .... modeling tips on the reverse side ....

Image

Some features include molded-in crew, raised panel lines, unopened wheel wells ....

Image

Image

This will be OOB, crew will remain, wheels will be up, on the stand, maybe I'll take down some panel lines ....

Disclaimer: Some of you may think you saw this before, and you are right - it was to be done in the Riff-RAAF GB back in 2011, but I never got past the opening pix due to some real-world issues. And no, I am not doing the flaps & all that this time around.

I am going to enjoy watching this build John, I first built the Frog Gannet when I was eleven.

No pix, I spent a bit of time trimming off flash and dealing with a couple ejector marks. I also filled the two slots where the gear doors would mount. And just to have some glue involved I started assembly of the prop ....

I did a test fit, it all fits nice. I am going to do it wheels up, on the stand.

What I still haven't decided is whether to take some/all of the raised lines off and if so, do I rescribe (which I really detest). Might need a nice day outside to do that ....

I'm looking forward to this John, I love the simplicity of these old Frog kits, they are like 'Modelling therapy' to build after wrestling through a previous complex and lengthy build of something else. (Sorry, I could have worded that better, but you get what I mean).

After I complete something with 100+ parts that took far too long, I reach for one of these kits. I recently did the Frog Supermarine Attacker. No detail, wrong shaped canopy, no undercarriage bays! So simple, so quick to build (zero filler), simple paint job, and I really enjoyed it!

I'm actually glad you're doing it OOB, I think that's great. Little point in adding detail, because if that's what's wanted one might as well just by the Revell offering. This is gonna be cool!

No pix again, but I did take it outside for some air & sunshine and did a quick scribe along the major panel lines - a bit freehand I'm afraid.

In next couple days, I'll go take down the raised lines and clean up the scribed ones -- then take some pix before we get too far along.

I did want to note that something is happening.

Coincidentally, yes

I had some time to scribe the panel lines and take down most of the raised ones - then spray a coat of Tamiya grey primer on it.

Should be able to get some glue spilled on it in the next few days - I'm on a tight schedule through Wednesday.

That is seriously good scribing John, I'm impressed, it's a skill waaaaaaay beyond my abilities.

Thanks for the update, I'm enjoying this one a lot.

That scribing looks great. I have tried and failed miserably before but this may inspire me to have another go

My "trick" was to scribe along the raised panel lines, then sand down the panel lines, brush out the dust, and then run Tamiya thin glue down them to clean them out. Probably a few areas need cleaning yet.

Wings together, fuselage together, and the wings mated right up to the fuselage with virtually no help from me !!

I'll let this dry today, get the stabs on tomorrow and away we go.

I have had a very full last 10 days or so, but today should be the end of it for a bit and I'm hoping to get a few real bench days and get to work on painting.
