OT's Flying Wing Fighter
Another Horten 229. A great looking aircraft but I have never built this kit before.
The kit camo schemes don't impress me so I may use some artistic license and do a night intruder scheme.
Time will tell. Looking forward to this.

This GB is full of flying wings. Nice choice and a night fighter version would be good
Enjoyment over accuracy. That's my motto

Re: OT's Flying Wing Fighter
I built the PM version for a GB and thought the same about the camouflage colours and went for the retro look.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

It's a lovely kit to build!
Best wishes

I remember that one Splash, very impressive.
Can you remember if there were any fit issues with the kit?

Re: OT's Flying Wing Fighter
Thanks for that James. Very useful to see how it goes together although I don't think I will bother boxing in the engines as time for building is a bit tight this month.
Tonight whilst the family are all watching 'The Voice', (no accounting for taste!) I got started on this beauty with a glass of vino to hand and Bad Company blasting out of the CD player.
As usual the cockpit tub comes first. This is little more than a tubular framework and IP. There is a very nice seat but I will leave that out until later as I need to find a pilot figure. This build will represent an aircraft in flight. The instructions are a little basic and leave a lot for the builder to figure out. Although that could just be me.
A dry fit of the fuselage main pieces revealed a slight lip between the front and top (parts 23 & 4) so I abandoned the construction sequence as laid down by Revell and attached the fuselage front to the top of the body. The idea being to have a good fit here and deal with any lip or other fit issues on the underside where it is less likely to be seen. It remains to be seen whether this was a cunning plan.
Anyway, progress so far
I painted the engines before attaching them:
Whilst the glue on that sets I will crack on with the wings. More to follow.
I had forgotten how good Bad company sound.

Re: OT's Flying Wing Fighter
Just getting back to this after my failed Blitz build.
All the major parts are assembled and the cockpit is painted, just awaiting the pilot before the canopy goes on.
I must say that this kit is lovely with no fit issues at all.
I have also been playing around with potential camouflage markings. I wonder if this would work?
This is the reason I like these Luft46 projects. Anything goes.

Underside painted RLM 66 using Xtracrylix paint.
I'm Batman!
Just testing some Revell Aqua color silver paint. Very impressed.

Should start work on the top camo tomorrow.

The more I see this the more I tempted to get one especially seeing how good a job you're doing on it.

Re: OT's Flying Wing Fighter
It goes together like a dream Toby with the possible exception of the front canopy piece which is a bitch to mask and difficult to fit. There is nothing substantial to attach it to. The only way I could get it to stay on was to attach the rear canopy first then join the front piece to it.
It is a lovely looking aircraft though. I can see plenty more of these in my future. Endless fun with camo schemes.

I have been toying with the idea of doing a digital camo design on a WW2 whatif myself so would be really interested to see you doing this.Old_Tonto wrote:I have also been playing around with potential camouflage markings. I wonder if this would work? :???

Here you go, my experiment with digital camouflage continues.despondman wrote:I have been toying with the idea of doing a digital camo design on a WW2 whatif myself so would be really interested to see you doing this.Old_Tonto wrote:I have also been playing around with potential camouflage markings. Outer wings first:
I printed out the pattern that I found on the web on clear decal paper. The lighter grey is the primer colour showing through.
I think it would work really well over white or blue as well.
Next up the tricky task of decalling over those curves.
