Star Wars VII - The Force Awakens - *** Spoiler Thread ***
If you do not want to know what happens, do not read any further.
This thread is for those who have seen the subject movie, or who don't care if they learn something in advance.
If you are one of those "never seen Star Wars and don't care to" people, this thread isn't for you either.
I started this because the "Latest Movie Seen" thread is starting to push the boundaries - can't but help to.
I have quoted a few posts and made my remarks, just to kick things off.

Crikey!. The more I think it over the more I'm sure I liked it!. You always have hype, especially for Star Wars but this really was worth seeing. Everyone's there and the effects are much more real than CGI (apart from spaceships etc!).
I remember a quote from someone somewhere saying 'Please Disney don't mess this up'.
I don't think they have.
SJPONeill wrote:Good to hear some positive feedback about the new movie...Disney's track record with franchises is pretty good...
In preparation for when I can get to civilisation to see it, I've just completed the bootleg despecialised version of the original trilogy, ending with return of the Jedi last night (twice - fell asleep the first time)...

Just got back; it is great - pays homage to the original (IV-VI) while moving on with a terrific ending.
Daisey Ridley as Rey is superb !
Going back in a couple-three days.
MarkyM607 wrote:The new film has a great 'look', the walls, corridors etc all look smart shiny and new but they are reminiscent of the original look. VII also did humour spot on, in a way that, despite my liking for them, the prequels didn't. Han and Chewie are as good as ever and have an even better respectful bicker/banter!. I found myself smiling big time just when the 'STAR WARS' yellow outline appeared and went into the distance...
Mind you, I think I would fit in well in the SW galaxy, nearly everyone seems British!!.
bobblelink wrote:The force Awakens- superb, good to see some Brits as heroes this time- loved the humour and playing spot -the -famous- actor- in-a-cameo.
Well worth going to see.

The first time through was a bit busy with all the old/new, but 2nd time really allowed me to follow the dialog & nuances much closer.
Both times I watched in 2-D which allowed me to focus on the plot - now I'm ready for IMAX.
Just might do another in a few days.

Yes, but that was intentional and the right thing to do. So much better than starting with a clean slate - it would have disappointed the huge fan base. IV established the franchise and was the best received - it gets everyone into a comfort zone of the familiar, and links the new to the old by ensuring that the older fans get to see their favorites from 40 years ago and establish a transition from then to "now". They now can move on and will, but I suspect incrementally.MarkyM607 wrote:Have noticed the plot of VII is similar to IV, won't list them yet in case people haven't seen it but if you have, think it over...

Have to agree there John, in a way it makes sense. The First Order is from 'the ashes of the Empire' so super giant planet killers are a pre requisite I suppose!!. I don't think what you've mentioned is bad either, it is a good link and VII is definitely in 'the spirit of IV' It was just someone at my slimming said her friend or relative of friend your side of the pond mentioned the similar plots as though they had been lazy in making VII. Didn't have my brain going enough to think to say what you have. Still think VII is cracking stuff. Can't believe about Solo though!. Still don't because I'm still hoping he isn't done for.jRatz wrote:Yes, but that was intentional and the right thing to do. The scene between him and Kylo Ren was great because the more it went on and Solo appeared to be getting somewhere with his son, the more I began to think 'uh-oh what's coming?'. Now I know!.

No, the Solo-Ren thing would not have worked if Solo had persuaded him to come home to Mom - there wouldn't have been a chief villain to carry through to VIII.
So count Harrison/Han out. Add in it allows Rey to take over the MF and have Chewie & R2 along. Too hokey any other way.
Leia probably won't get many scenes from now either; SWMBO's 1st comment was she could barely move her face for all the botox. Her "Force be with you" hand-off to Leia was a bit weak also ....

I saw the film this evening with Sarah. I certainly enjoyed the film, there's no doubt about that but I'm not sure if my expectations were set way too high. There seemed to be something lacking. It didn't leave me with that 'HELL YES' feeling that episode IV left me with. The acting was good, characters believable, action sequences were superb (missed seeing the Vulcan though ) Maybe it was that it was too much like Episode IV?. the suspense was gone as the storyline was almost a repeat?. I'm not sure. BUT having said all this I do want to see it again as it's a fine film in it's own right.
Oh and is it just me or is Kylo Ren a Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen lookalike?
All the best.

I loved it. The Tall vegetarian Wife, Philistine that she is, sat through it bored to tears but as most of you know I am basically 12 years old and there is absolutely no way that I wasn't going to love it. And how can you not punch the air as that squadron of X-Wings comes in low across the lake ready to completely and utterly spoil somebody's day.
Best Star Wars since Empire. And I really, REALLY want to know who Rey really is.

I thought it was really enjoyable, yes there are more than a few similarities to IV but it was by no means a waste to go and see. Loved the aerial and space scenes re: x-wings and TIE's. Loved the take-off in the Falcon by Rey, had to winch as the old girl (Falcon not Rey) was scraped along the desert.
In the books Han and Leia have three children, Jacen (boy) and Jaina (girl) who are twins, and Anakin, named after his Grandfather. Rey could be Jaina if Kylo Ren is their son?...

I think they've kind of abandoned the Extended Universe - that is to say, the books. Kylo Ren, who would have been Jacen Solo, was referred to as Ben. I'm ok with this, but Mara Jade would have been a lot of fun to see on screen.

We saw this the other day - and we really enjoyed it. Star Wars is back!
We think it is obvious that Rey and Kylo are cousins - Kylo is the son of Leia and Han, while Rey is the daughter of Luke and a mystery mother, so we've been theorizing who the mom could be. I'm betting it's one of the Kardashian sisters - they seem to be everywhere else...
Oh, and I was disappointed to learn that Denis Lawson turned down the chance to reprise Wedge in the new movie.

I like the idea - and I forget where I read it - that Rey is related in some way to Obi Wan. Of course, it will turn out that she is in fact the product of an ill advised liason between BB-8 and Jabba the Hutt. Or something.

Also, I would say that Force Awakens is the best Star Wars movie bar none and easily eclipses all the others (not that it's hard to eclipse the prequels!). I was take-it-or-leave-it about the series previously, but have now become a rabid wild-eyed fanboy as a result of this movie. It's absolutely brilliant.

Didn't the 'dream sequence' in the cellar give it away for you guys? Seemed obvious to me.

Re: Star Wars VII - The Force Awakens - *** Spoiler Thread *
I've seen it twice now and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Ok so it's not original and it's basically a remake of IV - message hidden in droid, hero living a dull life on a desert planet doesn't know she's a jedi, enemy base to be destroyed, main character getting killed, even dialogue "we think they may be splitting up" you get the picture - but none of that took anything away from it. Kylo Ren made a couple of hints to Rey that they could be siblings - no more Han Solo to rely on and one other I can't remember but I wonder if the writers / director of VIII get a clean slate and can dismiss this or are there certain things they have to continue with?
Overall I loved it.
