Daz's Wooden Warbird - **FINISHED**

Post by DazDaMan »

There was only one option for me for this GB, and it's this:

And I'm hoping to make it look like this:

This is KA114, one of only two flyable Mosquitos in the world. Restored in New Zealand and flying in America, this aircraft is an FB.26, which is basically similar to the FB.VI.

Should be fun...!

Nice choice Daren. Looking forward to seeing this one.

All the best.

It's a nice kit, Daz, but there are a couple of things to watch out for.

Firstly, the wings are a very tight fit to the fuselage. A little chamfering of the edges of the wing root recess may be in order.

Secondly, the undercarriage can be a pig to fit properly (if you're going wheels-down). What I found helped was using a twist drill on all location holes on the undercarriage legs and nacelles, and ensure the x-shaped cross-pieces are completely dry on one undercarriage leg before trying to fit the second. Then let the undercarriage assemblies dry completely before mounting in the nacelles. Slowly slowly catchee monkey on this one.

Oh yeah! Almost forgot. Make sure you use the correct nacelle half pieces when assembling. The joint with the wing is meant to look asymmetric!!!

Build log here refers: http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=181&t=1311&start=60

regards,

Martin

OK, so I made a start on this beastie today. This is more plastic than I'm used to seeing at this scale!

Anyway, after an hour or so, we've got this far:

The decals will be mostly from the kit, with some new ones for the codes and serials.

Don't forget Daz; two propellers does not always equal two Spitfires..... :-D

This one has four - and I hope I've painted up the correct ones! According to the Wiki article on the type, the FB.26 was essentially similar to the FB.VI, differing mainly in the engines. I'm hoping the props were the same, however!

Hi Daz.
Great work so far mate. Nice one. Looking at pics of KA114 it looks like it's fitted with the broad blade props. Hope those are the ones you have painted.

All the best.

I slapped a bit of filler over the fuselage join line and left it a couple of days to cure properly. I'll crack on with the Mossie again next week.

Some more inspiration for you Daz! Some (average) video I shot at the Mosquito Launch Spectacular airshow, three days after KA114's post-restoration flight: https://youtu.be/jTFQmrNBz8E;

Very nice, Zac!

Sorry I've not been updating this one - I've been busy with the dogfight GB. Once the '109K is finished, I'll be focused on this one.
