Airfix Gnat T.1 in Yellow Jacks colours.

In honor of all those ol' training aircraft - the home of many a foundering fledgling oblivious that while the IP was attempting to show a calm, reassuring demeanor, his hands, tightly clutched onto some aircraft part, were slowly tearing it to pieces .... Many of us have been there .... The GB runs 1 to 29 Nov, and your host is Old_Tonto.

Airfix Gnat T.1 in Yellow Jacks colours.

Post by Stevehnz »

I've been a bit slow to get off the ground on this one, possibly a bit ambitious for this time of year for me doing two GBs, but we'll see how we get on.
First up, the sprue/box shot.

Although this is the starter set, I won't be using the paints from the set & have printed out some instructions for the full kit from the ATF website & will use the colour calls for the interior work from that.
Some progress, albeit modest but sometimes that first step is the hardest. ;-)

Is that the new tool?

I know what you mean about group builds and this time of the year. I find myself involved in 3 at the same time. :???:

Yes this is the new tool, from what I've seen of it it goes together well, least wise the bit I've done so far. I should get some more done in the next couple of days, but, a quick query for anyone who has built one of these before. Are they a tail sitter, if so, how much weight is needed in the nose before I join it up?

Cockpit completed & ready to button the fuselage up. Being a display aircraft I'm only going for one pilot, hence the wee bit of lead shot in each half of the nose, although its reputed to not be a tail sitter, I figure why take a chance especially with one less crew up front.

All buttoned up, tail feathers on & looking like an aeroplane.

Still a little filling & fettling before painting. I'm not a fan of the tiny wee fin aerials on the centre line being cast in place, they do make cleaning up the centre seam a bit of a bind. I've already trinmmed one off thinking it was a sprue dag

I'm very much on the last leg with this one. A couple of days ago I had this.

& as of tonight I have this.

Pretty much done other than a clear coat over the decals & some decent pictures. Up tomorrow night I hope.

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.
