Anyone for a What if . . . ? ** Complete/Archived **

Post by Martin R »

I think most members will be familiar with the concept, but in case not, a "What if?" examines vehicles that might have been if things had gone differently somehow. I'm thinking of making this a pure "flying machine" GB (ie fixed or rotary wing, and lighter-than-air) but would widen to cover other vehicles if the interest is there.

A "What if?" can be as simple as putting an existing machine in non-historical markings, or can result in major kit-bashing to develop 'hardware' that never actually existed (but should have), so it's as much or as little as you want to do.

Re timing, after a quick gander at the 2014 GBs, it's going to be 2015 sometime.

Let me know if you're interested. regards,

Martin

The options are only limited by your imaginations. Two that I have been idly thinking of:

Bf109Z-10: Basically 2 Revell Bf109G-10s joined by a scratch-built constant chord wing and tail section. I'm thinking either a night-fighter or a Pulk zerstorer with some meaty underwing cannon.

Pegasus Martin Baker MB5 "Venom Mk I" in 2ATAF 1945 markings.

Here are some others:

FAA Corsair Mk V from Operation 'Olympic' in Nov 1945:

Wg Cdr Roland Beamont's RAF Tiger Force Tempest Mk II also from Nov 1945:

I should point out that part of the fun is coming up with the scenario - or 'back story' - as to how your "What if?" came about. For the two above, the fairly simple scenario is prompted by the question: "What if the Manhattan Project had not delivered in 1945?"

Other scenarios: What if the RAF had ordered F-14s, F-15s, F-16s? What if the TSR-2 had come into service? What if the Rolls Royce Vulture engine had worked? Etc., etc.

regards,

Martin

I'm up for a bit of Whiffery, count me in.

The backstory for this one was 'What if the He112 was chosen to be the Luftwaffe's fighter instead of the Bf109?'

I'm thinking about a Bf-109F in Irish Air Corps markings. A relatively easy whif.
