First the home loco's
Class 20.
Class 52, Western Hydraulic, "Western Courier".
Now the guest engines.
Class 24, 24081.
Class 37, 37109.
Two class 55s where in attendance. So neither hell nor high water would stop me getting there to see a pair of Deltics, it being twenty years since I've seen one, and thirty five since I've heard one.
First D9009 "Alycidon"
And finally 55002 "The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry"

Every body loves the Deltic's (class 55's) or English Electric type 5 to give it it's proper name, even the "steams best" guy's, though a lot would never admit such a heinous crime.jRatz wrote:Not a diesel guy, but the two S55 are interesting. Thanks!!
Equipped with two delta configured diesel engines, (3 cylinders and 3 cranks arranged in a triangle) and a weight of a "mere" 100tons, they had a power output of 3300 horsepower, when the best anyone else could manage was about 1700. They sound glorious when both motors are running on full chat, (unfortunately on this occasion only one was running in each loco).
22 of them replaced 66 the Gresley A4's (Mallard type) on the 400 mile long route from London to Edinburgh, often running none stop.
I hope this is all of interest.

Nice to see railway stock being preserved that isnt steam (not that I dont like steam engines) the railway museum next to my house preserves underground rail machines as used in the pits of north east England . Its very interesting to see these things that would probably have just been left insitu when the pits closed , never to see the light of day again.

Did you know the Royal Navy used the same Deltic engine in the Ton class minesweepers?
