Re: Airfix 1/72 WWII RAF Bomber Airfield
Very nice diorama with a real bit of 'life' about it. You can almost here the clang of a dropped spanner and a tuneless whistle from a busy erk.
Nice to see some of the old RAF Personnel polythene figures in there too.
I just can't get along with that horrible bendy plastic unfortunately so I went the Revell route for the wee guys.
In my RAF Support set the maintenance tower was all warped, I had to cut away several of the horizontal rails and replace them they were that bad.
Will be getting a second set, hopefully I'll have better luck with that.

Hey, Ratch !
Have you got a clear shot of where/how parts 85 & 86 fit on the AEC Matador fueler ? The instruction drawing makes no sense to me. I'm assuming it is an exhaust ?
Thanks !

Yes John they are the exhaust. 85 is inserted in the hole in the chassis plate below the driver's position with the silencer pointing inwards and 86 is cemented to it pointing forward (as illustrated on the instructions). It must be well tucked in under the cab and I can't find a clear picture of it, but here are some references

Re: Airfix 1/72 WWII RAF Bomber Airfield
Thanks, Ratch, that's what the instructions show, but I couldn't fathom the exhaust (86) pointed forward - among other things it then means it is venting right under (and thus into) the cab, not good if you want the driver of 9500 gal of Avgas to stay alert ....
But you are right, it is well-hidden, so I shouldn't agonize over it I guess ...
Well, after an hour or so, I found this .... you can see the exhaust sticking out forward fairly well ...

Re: Airfix 1/72 WWII RAF Bomber Airfield
Guess cross-country driving wasn't important .... I'd hate to hit a high spot and pack the exhaust full of dirt

Re: Airfix 1/72 WWII RAF Bomber Airfield
I guess that this particular type of Matador was only used on bomber airfields, and these had plenty of concrete to drive one

Can't be 100% sure but I think it had something to do with it being a petrol tanker and running the hot exhaust away from the flammable load?

Very well executed and very lifelike. I do like the wet effect to emphasise the British climate. How did you do it?
Enjoyment over accuracy. That's my motto

Inspirational build Ratch ,saw this at Telford. Airfix have made an ommission on the fuel/oil bowser . at the front end the Lister 3 hp petrol engine that drove the Zwicky pump at the rear is missing. On the Bedford MWD I have sanded off the gun ring ? on the canvas cab roof. Building the bowser is a very tight fit swipe(CAD design) and dry run fit before glueing all parts.

Re: Airfix 1/72 WWII RAF Bomber Airfield
Excellent work when I first viewed it I thought it was 1/48 scale now I notice it's only 1/72 it's even more impressive.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.
Re: Airfix 1/72 WWII RAF Bomber Airfield
Thanks guys, unfortunately the diorama is no more as grandson #2 decided to liberate and relocate many of the vehicles and figures - I have a bag full of bits awaiting repair
