OT's Delta Winged Mirage *** Finished ***
I had to search the stash for this group build & I came up with this strange little box:
I picked up a couple of these on the bay for next to nothing. It is the Revell release of the old Matchbox kit. I think it was given away with an Italian magazine once upon a time.
Here are the contents:
Hopefully it should end up looking something like this:
I hope to get started later today.

Re: OT's Delta Winged Mirage
Nice choice OT. The Mirage does tend to be a bit under-represented in model-making.

The Mirage III is a lovely looking jet for sure OT and the two-seater makes a nice change.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Re: OT's Delta Winged Mirage
Thanks guys. Time for modelling is limited this month but I will give it a go.
So I made a start by cleaning up the parts. Lots of flash & the plastic is tough as nails. I remember why I used to use metal workers files on Matchbox kits.
As expected there is no cockpit to speak of. I don't even think there are any instrument panels. The seats are rubbish too:
I will have to jazz them up a bit & stick a couple of pilots in the pit. Might even do this one in flight. I have painted the interior black as South African Mirages are like that.
I should have said, this will be a Mirage IIIBZ. The kit comes with SAAF markings but they are not very good so the spares box will provide what I need.
I have stuck the engine exhaust in. The blu-tak is just to hold it in position whilst the cement dries.
Agreed Shaun, I had intended to build Mirage IIIE but they didn't enter service until 1970 & I really wanted to to a NMF.ShaunW wrote:The Mirage III is a lovely looking jet for sure OT and the two-seater makes a nice change.

The Mirage is a great looking plane, I am looking forward to seeing this one develop.

Nice choice O.T. I built this from the same type of box. The decals were shocking, just fell apart in the water. I did mine a an S.A machine and had to use odds and sods for decals.

Re: OT's Delta Winged Mirage
Actually Shane it was your build that inspired my choice of this kit. I agree about the decals, I will be using spares too & have to paint the red flash. I went for a NMF scheme because I am going to end up with a lot of Mirages wearing the same deep buff - Olive green camo.shangos70 wrote:Nice choice O.T. I built this from the same type of box. Anyway, on to my progress. I started to titivate the ejection seats and dug out a couple of pilots from the Revell NATO pilots set.
I won't go overboard on the cockpit but these will at least make it look busy. As you can see from the next image this cupboard is very bare!
Like Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. There is a piece that goes between the two pilots position so at least you won't see the floor or lack of.
One advantage of no cockpit tub is that the rest of the build can continue whilst I work on the seats. This old kit goes together really well.
A little filling & sanding then on to primer. I may try to make the recessed lines a little shallower.

Those Mirages had really classic lines - nice work OT

Re: OT's Delta Winged Mirage
Yes you have to love the arrow head shape. Very Gerry Anderson or Thunderbirds feel about Mirages. I seem to recall a TV series in the 70's about a couple of Mirage pilots. Can't remember what they got up to but I was hooked on the flying sequences.Sir T wrote:Those Mirages had really classic lines - nice work OT
Primer applied.
Get some colour on soon. Just a few seams to work on.

Re: OT's Delta Winged Mirage
Giving Matchbox their due, they really have captured the lines of the Mirage very well indeed.
Mind you, I do think the quality of the build is helping.

Re: OT's Delta Winged Mirage
Do you mean the French TV series " The Aeronauts"? One of the stories included Mirage IIIs (and Canberras) but their main aircraft were two Super Mysteres and the baddie always flew a black T-33.Old_Tonto wrote:Sir T wrote: I seem to recall a TV series in the 70's about a couple of Mirage pilots. Re: OT's Delta Winged Mirage
That's the one David. I was very young & I think I assumed all the planes were Mirages because they were French. I had forgotten about the villainous black T-33. Would be a cool build.
Too kind Daz, Matchbox deserve all the credit. A resin cockpit would really enhance this kit but I don't think anyone makes one. I did consider filling in the deep recessed panel lines but I am too lazy.Dazzled wrote:Giving Matchbox their due, they really have captured the lines of the Mirage very well indeed.

That sounds like a cool program!
Nice work on that OT - I really like the lines. I don't actually mind the MB trenches, they give it characture

Re: OT's Delta Winged Mirage
Does anyone know if this hole should be filled in?
I may use it to fit a stand.
I have started by applying paint. These fuselage bands are much darker that the surrounding aluminium.
So I brushed on some Citadel chrome. They will be masked off before the whole kit is sprayed.
