Splash's WW1 Mk IV Heavy Tank ***Finished***
When this GB was first suggested I found a nice 1/72 Mk IV tank designed by a Clifton W Mc Cullough.
So I thought I would give it a go whilst my other builds set.
I have always liked the design of the early tanks since I first saw one in Ashford Kent, I don't think it's there now.
Tonight I printed it off and thought, I would just try a few parts for a test build and before I knew it I had the basics of one side built.

Re: Splash's WW1 Mk IV Heavy Tank
These are great models, Splash...interesting subjects and great designs. I've only built the St Chamond so far but even in its original 1/72 and with my fat fingers it was both a fun build and one that came out really well...you'll enjoy this one and, I'd wager, be hard pressed to resist trying so of the other armour designs or the aircraft...
Please critique my posts honestly i.e. say what you think so I can learn and improve...

I have his Gun Carrier, blown up from 1/48 to 1/35, as my next effort, hopefully soon ....

If it's as good as this kit, you will enjoy yourself.jRatz wrote:I have his Gun Carrier, blown up from 1/48 to 1/35, as my next effort, hopefully soon ....
The simple design makes for a quick good looking build.

The Ashford Tank is still permanently on display Splash and is used to hide an electricity sub-station.

I thought it was used as a sub-station but did not want to sound like an old fool as it would have been nearly 50 years ago since I last saw it

Very smart looking Splash, you seem to be a natural at these paper kits. I would like to have a go at this one myself, is it downloadable?

Sorry I forgot to add the download link in my rush to build it, so here it is http://www.landships.info/landships/models.html# look for Models by Wayne McCulough, Mark IV Heavy Tank. There are lots of good WW1 Tank downloads so I can see me building more.Molly-new wrote:Very smart looking Splash, you seem to be a natural at these paper kits. Re: Splash's WW1 Mk IV Heavy Tank
Being "open-topped", the Gun Carrier is a bit more complex, plus I will have to stiffen it to hold the weight of a resin 6in howitzer and probably do some modifying (to both) also.

Re: Splash's WW1 Mk IV Heavy Tank
Having seen how robust these card models are you might not need to stiffen it, as its only the front of the Gun Carrier that's open, the rear is enclosed.jRatz wrote:Being "open-topped", the Gun Carrier is a bit more complex, plus I will have to stiffen it to hold the weight of a resin 6in howitzer and probably do some modifying (to both) also.
Am I right in thinking that the wheels would come off the gun and are mounted on the side of the carrier at the rear and that the gun carriage sits on the floor of the carrier?

Hi John
I have just looked at the Gun Carriage and can see what you mean when you say re-enforce, the floor that the gun sits on is quite fine. I did not realise the rear cabin was open at the front and that the engine and ammo bins are all on view.
It looks a good kit, I will have fun watching you when you build it.

Re: Splash's WW1 Mk IV Heavy Tank
That is correct, the wheels were removed; the 6in howitzer could fire from the gun carrier, the 60lb'r could not.splash wrote:Having seen how robust these card models are you might not need to stiffen it, as its only the front of the Gun Carrier that's open, the rear is enclosed.jRatz wrote:Being "open-topped", the Gun Carrier is a bit more complex, plus I will have to stiffen it to hold the weight of a resin 6in howitzer and probably do some modifying (to both) also.

Re: Splash's WW1 Mk IV Heavy Tank
If anyone needed converting to card models this is the kit to build, the simple shapes make it easy to build and it looks brilliant.
I'm now at the stage where I have to add all the extra detail like the de-ditching beams that run along the top and the fiddly stuff like the gun barrels (I think I will cheat and use plastic tubing for the guns.)
