Lancfan's RAF Cuckoo Rescue Float. ***DNF***

Post by lancfan »

Having made up the balsa wood blank for this as a precaution (shown on my Lobster Pot build) I think I will have time to include this as part of this GB. Here is the wooden blank that I made up over the weekend.

I sense a theme developing within a theme. These will definitely be unique.

The basic shape of the hull was made by cutting the faceted hull form out of the block step by step.

The hull has been sealed with sanding sealer and primed in grey acrylic. The basic shell of the cabin roof & entrance is now being made up from plastic card and is shown as I left it last night dry fitted to the model, a balsa wood display stand has been made up for the finished model to rest on.

This is brilliant work on a very interesting subject. Makes me want to try a project out in balsa.

That sounds like a good idea for a GB "Builds that include Balsa" builds that are built or modified using Balsa.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

...or even a total "Scratchbuilt" build too!

A good book to read on how to do this is "Aircraft in Miniature" by W.O. Doylend. published by M.A.P. in 1957.

I was always a former & stringer person, rather than a carver, but would be up for either. I have Aircraft in Miniature and others, plus several decades of Aeromodeller; in the old days, many times Aircraft Described contained some model construction advice.

Before I finish the superstructure I have glued balsawood blocks to each side to form the deck extensions, these were then carved to shape and sealed. I then returned to the superstructure and fitted out the entrance at the top of the stairs, there is no interior to this model but I did fit a top step, the stairwell is represented by dark grey paint. I do not know what colour the interior actualy was but have guessed at white and the natural colour of the plastic card will do for this.
Image

The roof was fitted next and then the portholes needed installing, after a little thought I did this- discs were cut from plastic card using a leather punch, they were then glued to the sides in the correct positions. When the glue had dried the discs were pilot drilled and then drilled out so that the discs now formed the rims of the portholes.
Image

That done the eyebrows needed fitting, to do that I cut thin slices of Evergreen tube and split them in half, the halves were then glued in place over the portholes, when they had dried the portholes/eyebrows were then sanded level.

The superstructure was now cyanoed to the deck and this is now how the model looks.

Cheers Daryl, there are more details to fit before painting the model and even more to make up and add after the model has been painted so even with nine days left to build this will be a close run thing and I do not intend to rush this so it may still be a DNF.
