Re: Gadfly's MiG 3 HB 1/72
Right I made a bit of a start with this.
Being a Easy kit it went together in about 5 minutes I chopped off al of the locating pegs which helped with getting everything aligned and then test fitted the wing to fuselage adjusting as required then once I had a fit I was happy with I bonded it with CA..
About 1 1/2 hrs got us this far..
A bit of thinned Tamiya filler dealt with any seam. The cockpit is nicely detailed but I'd like to have this one with the canopy open so I added an inner frame work from some stretched sprue and a throttle assembly from a bit of scrap plastic with a junction box on the other wall again from scrap plastic..
I also chopped out the wingtip lights and then bonded in some bits of coloured plastic which once zapped I sanded back for formation lights. I'm probably going to paint it in Winter Camo so a bit of colour will liven things up..
More to do but I've broken the ice with this build..
Cheers

Re: Gadfly's MiG 3 HB 1/72
So I've been making a bit of progress with the MiG.
I added some riveting to the inner wing area.
I also added the small fins around the oil coolers on either fide of the engine.. These are just bits of plastic card. The kit had them but they were undersized and a little soft.
I also opened up all of the intake scoops and Exhaust shrouds I could with the tip of a 10A blade. It's a simple and cheap improvement and adds a bit to the final result IMHO.
Finally I added some belts and the head rest in the cockpit..
I also had a scout round for some schemes for the colour scheme and I think I've settled on a winer scheme with an NMF cowl and Red Upper wings..
It looks interesting...
Thanks for Looking
Cheers

Remember doing the Red Star Mig-3 many , many moons ago. Not the best of kits but this HB looks a lot better, and your improvements are taking it up another notch. Watching with interest

Those extra details really improve the look. Top work.
This looks like a nice little kit.

I've built one of these and the lack of interior detail, in particular, was the only let down. Otherwise it's a great little kit and your extra detail is certainly making it even better.

Re: Gadfly's MiG 3 HB 1/72
Hi,
Thanks for the kind words.. I've been doing a bit more work on the MiG-3
first up I drilled out the Cowl mounted machine guns..
I also added in the 'Missing' Exhaust pipe from a bit of suitable styrene rod and you can see i also added a basic IP again form a scrap of sheet plastic and some slices of styrene rod.
I also added in the radiator and added the slats to the front of this again with a bit of sheet styrene. In the background you can see my ongoing MiG-25U build which is progressing slowly but steadily.
Here is the MiG-3 with the MiG-25
The kit is from Condor Ukraine and is quite nice although you need to treat it a bit like a limited run build. I'm slowly getting there..
Thanks for looking..

Re: Gadfly's MiG 3 HB 1/72
Very nice work. I was toying with this kit if I get stuck for time over the Revell 21 I intend to do. Having seen what you've achieved I probably won't bother
Enjoyment over accuracy. That's my motto
Re: Gadfly's MiG 3 HB 1/72
That is coming along well, and the extra detailing really lifts it.
As it is a winter finish does it have wheels or skis?

Wheels only in the box. I'm not sure if MiG-3 or the MiG-1 used ski's as the U/C is retractable so retracting skis into the wheel wells would prove interesting and leaving the U/C down would knock back top speed etc.. I'm sure someone will prove me wrong..SteveC wrote: As it is a winter finish does it have wheels or skis?

That looks like a nice little kit Gadfly!
Also I haven't seen a thread so would I be right in assuming the MiG-25 isn't part of the GB?
Either way with that pic of the -25 we have a complete lineup of MiG jets!

Correct.. I've been chipping away at the MiG-25U for a number of weeks on and off so it predates this GB beginning.
Anyhow progress has been underway on the MiG-3 and I've pretty much got it to the point of Decals.
The scheme is based on a MiG-3 with replacement wings off of either a MiG-1 or earlier MiG-3 to do this I filled in the leading edge slats to backdate the wings to the earlier variant.
It's painted in Tamiya acrylics which I mixed to get some representative WW2 Soviet colours which as you may know is a modelling forum minefield. I'm of the 'if it looks right then I'm happy' camp and don't want to get into any conversations on 'GPW Soviet colours'.
I have faded the Camo on the wings with a lightened very thin misting of the green which was lightened up quite a bit. I freehanded the green black camo scheme. The black is NATO black with red brown added. Under the lamp it's not that visible.
I need to fade the underside blue on the outer wings.. Touch up a bit of overspray and then decal the model ( which isn't big job) before commencing weathering on the white fuselage etc.. Add a Red Spinner and hopefully it'll look ok..
Cheers
