Tom's now leaving the station (finally!)

Post by TomW »

Firstly apologies to all of you who have been forging ahead with all the fantastic builds - I really should have been contributing more but I've been following along and been suitably impressed. It means I have a lot to live up to

My first set of builds promised for the display are a set of Mineral/Coal wagons; 11 of them to be precise and I have been quietly working on them:

These were supplied as a few part built and the rest as an assorted bag of parts. I still need to source replacement wheelsets and decals for the 11 but things are moving finally!

Tom DAPOL sell the wheels in packs of 10 here is the link http://dapol.co.uk/index.php?route=prod ... 177_62_156 or try your local Hornby stockist as they do them slightly cheaper.

Great stuff Tom, you've been a busy boy with those by the looks.

Looking good Tom. I've finally purchased the MDF to make the base boards so hopefully will get those cut up and some track laid this weekend - I think we may have more rolling stock than scale track miles at this rate so we may have to rotate the stock and take turns

Started work on the 0-4-0 Pug this week, as my decals are shot (its an original red stripe boxing) would any one mind if I finish this as a very tatty private owner loco? I was thinking heavily weathered black with hand painted / chalked on numbers.

It sounds a good plan to me, the little Pug's were real work horses and a lot of photos show them in dirty unloved conditions. you also see lots of restored one still running today but looking very clean in lots of different colours.

Go with it Tom, I reckon it's better to go for a finish that best represents the class.

Time for a major update on where I am. As I type I am all too aware that there are only 40 days left until Telford begins so priority has been given to those kits I know I can get finished in time.

Airfix / Dapol Detached Bungalow and Semi-Detatched House:

These are progressing smoothly and just need the painting and weathering finishing off and mounting onto simple bases.

Airfix / Dapol 0-4-0 Pug:

Getting there with this one, the back of the cab needs attaching as well as the cab roof and then the heavy weathering can begin.

KeilKraft 'T' type coach:

Undercoated and ready for a representative (read fictional ;-) ) paint scheme.

Airfix Airfield Refuelling Set:

Chassis complete and just awaiting tank fittings, these will be left in the Uniform Grey paint as ex-military vehicles for our airfield section.

Airfix E-Boat conversion:

This is a direct result of conversations between myself, Al and Chris at last weekends Farnborough show when we realised that we are lacking something to put in the water by the dockside. Especially as Splash has done such a great job of the Dockside Crane 8-) so I've volunteered my GB non-finish from the ship GB and set to converting her into a (very) small coastal tramp steamer. I'm going to add another level to the bridge structure and mount a funnel and handling crane to the midships deckhouse. Fit a couple of hatches to the midship hold and a stretched tarpaulin cover to the rear hold and I should be able to call it done.

The Mineral wagons haven't changed much recently but I do at last have a set of Smiths 3-link couplings on the way plus have sourced replacement decals; so once they arrive I can get those finished too.

I'll try to source another house kit to give us a bit more for the village as well as some more bits and pieces to flesh out the various scenes.

Wow, some truly great stuff coming along here Tom and in particular that E-Boat conversion is a top idea and not something I was expecting at all!

40 days?!?!? shhhhhhh! you're scaring me now :ha:

Cheers guys  I am really having to pull my finger out now for the show as I have only two days off for the rest of October  so there has been more positive progress:

Image

The fuel bowsers are nearly finished now with just some weathering to go, plus I've chosen a colour for the 'T' type coach that should show up well wherever its put on the layout:

Image

I've also put some hours into the E-boat conversion so that now I think you guys can see what I was trying to describe in my last post:

Also these have turned up:

So that now I am only waiting for the new wheelsets to arrive for me to be able to finish the Mineral Wagons.
