Toms' early Buccaneer

A simple GB, convert one thing to another - any subject, any scale, any era, any method, but ending up with a different variant, than what the bits provide for in the box.
GB runs 16th April to 29th May and your host is Martin R.

I knew the intakes were different but I didn't know they had that much difference!. Was going to convert an S.2 myself but will have to look into this more now.

For an S2B, would you use Airfix or Matchbox as the starting point? Also, wouldn't it be cool if Airfix brought out a new brick.

Regards

Martin

That's a good question Martin, I've never gotten my hands on the Matchbox kit so can't pass comment on that one but the Airfix kit really needs a replacement nose and tailplane (early or late depending on your timeframe / operator) as a minimum in my opinion. Replacing the undercarriage and ejector seats doesn't go amiss either.

The general outline is good though and at least it has a choice of early and late (bulged) bombbay doors included in the base kit.

MB is quite nice, and goes a different route by have traditional vertical split fuselage, with the engine and wing roots separate. It was to be the last kit I finished before University but stopped dead when I lost the canopy, I had done my best brush painting job on too.

Well having won a C-Scale Weapons and update kit for the Matchbox kit (RAF Germany fit) on E-bay today - annoyingly missing out on the RN weapons and equipment set from the same seller  - I might just have to pick up the Revell rebox and knock together an RAF Germany example to try it out

Anyways back to our surgery patient. First step this morning was to cement the fuselage halves in readiness for the hacking required:

Image

Next I fitted the replacement nose to further reinforce the fuselage:

Image

Then I got to hacking big chunks out of the rear fuselage:

Image

Always a terrifying moment but I made a pretty good job of it and the jetpipes at least roughly went in:

Image

Image

Image

With the tailplane and outer wings test fitted things start to look Buccaneer shaped:

Image

I then spent a therapeutic hour and a half watching the Snooker whilst fettling the fit of the jetpipes, all the resin conversion parts are now superglued into place and I'll be filling the gaps with Milliput next:

Image

Especially this one  which is a result of me having the jetpipes on the wrong sides  :

That's pretty much all the interesting bits finished for this conversion, now it'll just build like any other kit :ha:

Tom your starting to make my build look like its OOB :-D

That's impressive plastic surgery you are carrying out, keep up the great work. What colours will it finish up as all anti flash white or DSG/White or DSG?

My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Cheers Mark  Though when you get round to doing yours I'd recommend actually measuring the bits to cut out rather than eyeballing it like me - leads to a lot less faffing around later

Talking of which today was spent in the routine of Fill, Sand, Prime, Fill, Sand, Prime......you get the picture :ha: and here's how the Bucc looks this evening with the majority of the conversion properly blended in:

Apologies for the white primer, my usual choice of Grey spluttered and died after the first pass and as its a Bank Holiday weekend there isn't a lot of hope for a quick sortie to replenish stocks till next week

Hoping to have the wings and tail on by the start of next weekend.
