Splash goes from Belfast to Southampton

A simple GB, convert one thing to another - any subject, any scale, any era, any method, but ending up with a different variant, than what the bits provide for in the box.

That's fine as long as your not looking for an accurate conversion :-D

I have copied David's idea for extending kit parts by cutting and adding a strip of plastic to the hanger doors, next I can add the hanger roof and look at how to add the forward funnel.

A coat of primer has not shown up any major areas of concern so I'm happy with how the hanger has turned out. I think before I start adding funnels I need to sort out the rear waterline armour and the superstructure aft of the catapult.

Another big question I should think about is, do I carry on as a full hull on a stand or as a waterline model at sea?

Personally, I like waterline models.

That's looking brilliant Splash. I'd leave it as a full hull but only as I'd not want to ruin all that work on the hull!.
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

Waterline models do look smart, but it would be a shame to obscure the great work you have done upon the hull on the Southampton, though.

I'm still in too minds about how to display this ship, but in the mean time I have started to fix the rear armour by cutting out the surplus and filling.

Doing my usual trick of carrying out my research after starting the build, has highlighted my first error, I assumed the Belfast and Southampton had similar bridge structures, were as checking a photo I found today, showed the Southampton has a flat fronted bridge as opposed to the Belfast's curved bridge.

To correct the error I have cut off the front of the bridge and re-built it using flat card.

The Bridge is looking better and HMS Daring has joined the Southampton on the slipway.

A productive day at the bench has got the Southampton looking more ship shape, as you can see I have started to add the fwd funnel and the rear superstructure.

That is starting to look more than a bit special Alan mate. Nice work. Looking at this has spured me on to consider doing the only warship conversion I have plans for, turning the Airfix Tribal class destroyer into a river class. Namely HMS Plym as she was when used in the nuclear blast test 'Operation Hurricane'.

All the best.

Cheers Greg.

Work on the deck behind the hanger has started and has highlighted that it was more complex than I initially expected.

This demonstrated working from plans is fine, but using photos makes the plans make a lot more sense.

I have now decided on what colour scheme. I'm going to try the June 1940 scheme as used when operating in Norway, that's a mixture of green, brown, grey & black.
