With the cockpit parts made up and installed and the nose weight added the fuselage was ready to be joined together.

The next step was to attach the tailplanes, pictures of the real aircraft in Manchester show these at a slight negative angle so that is how I have positioned them on the model, at this stage the wings are merely dry fitted as I will paint the fuselage and wings separately before glueing them together.

Before I continue this is a sneak peak at my second build, the Sword Lightning F.1.

Ooooh that Sword kit looks so tempting and the decals have me salivating. I planned to do a F1 of 74 Squadron from one of my two old Airfix clunkers and some old Modeldecals decals but I may have a rethink.

Anyway, some small progress here. I only had one F1 type fin. So I did the reverse of what BAC did and cut an F3 fin down to size. The F2 has its new, beefier cable ducts, the pilots are in and canopies are on (but clamped to try to improve the fit).

The canopy has been fitted and the fuselage primed- it's now time to paint.

Glad it's not just me - although I use Humbrol #1.

The painting's almost finished on the F.3 - Not my best work maybe but a good introduction back into the wonderful world of enamels.

Just a few touch ups and some detail painting left to do.

That does look good! Just curious but why enamels? I ask because I have been tempted to go back to them for their better coverage (esp. for brushing) and durability but thought I'd find the drying time a problem (although it should not be given my glacial pace of modelling!)

Hi David - I just prefer them.

Most of my models last year were painted in the house so I had to use Acrylics out of respect for my family that can't stand the smell of enamels. But as much as I enjoy painting with acrylics, I find enamels much nicer to paint with - They cover better, flow nicer and adhere better IMHO - and besides, I really like the smell!

Cheers
