Historical References

From 1 April 1918, to present, celebrating anything RAF -- land, sea, air, person -- any kit, any scale, not whiffs. This GB incorporates the 617 Sqn/Opn Chastise 75th GB. Originally a 3 month GB, it is now super-extended through the rest of 2018. Part started kits will also be allowed to join.

These references are focused on birth of the RAF and leading up to WW2.

James' The Paladins is a social history and well worth the read.

Just finished this. An excellent read, a little long at 613 pages. But well worth the effort.

I am researching for my 617 Sqdn Canberra build and found Flypast magazine for May 2013 has an article that contains a description and photo of a P-38 in RAF markings that 617 used. Apparently it was borrowed from the local US commander and used briefly in August 1944 ,mostly for testing but for at least one mission, as a target marking aircraft. It has UK roundels but no serial.

I've never heard that one before!

Interesting story David. I’ve got a book here about US pilots that joined the RAF Eagle Squadron. It’s called THE FEW. It’s a very good look at how some of the Yanks had to bend some rules to not only get to join up but to England. Due to Neutrality and immigrations a lot of American pilots had to falsify passports, claim Canadian citizenship, just to get across the pond. One guy actually stowed away on a freighter.
