Ray'S Sentry

From 1 April 1918, to present, celebrating anything RAF -- land, sea, air, person -- any kit, any scale, not whiffs. This GB incorporates the 617 Sqn/Opn Chastise 75th GB. Originally a 3 month GB, it is now super-extended through the rest of 2018. Part started kits will also be allowed to join.

Ray'S Sentry

Post by RayS »

I will contribute with the good old Airfix Sentry, I have a Flightpath set for it (somewhere) and a 26 Decal sheet for ZH-103 in this scheme or ZH-104 in this scheme

Ray

That will be brilliant. I've never seen one built and will follow with interest.

Great choice, Ray, a bit of modern RAF gear. The two schemes that you are looking at are interesting but ZH-103 tips the balance for me, it's the tail flag, I can't really explain why but I just like big and bold tail markings!
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Cheers all, I am tipping toward 103 as well Shaun, I did get the decals sheet for that scheme all those years ago.

If all goes well there might be an A400M build as well or perhaps a Hercules.

I have dug the kit out and I find I have started the cockpit and assembled the engines (not very well it seems!).

No paint yet and the wings were taped together for storage I think, is this still eligible to enter?

The reason you don't see a box top shot is that it is in a Heller E-3A box as it shared the box with another kit that is partially complete as a USAF E-8C.

I agree with the boss, crack on Ray  I'm looking forward to seeing this one, a 1/72nd scale Sentry will look great I'm sure!

Thanks guys, I thought it would be the case but had to make sure. Of the E-3s in the stash, this was the only one with CFMs in it.

Looking forward to getting this one done. I might add a few scratch built enhancements along the way. I just need to make sure I have enough paint to cover it!

Great choice and an ambitious one too, I wouldn't dare tackle anything so big in a group build. Look forward to seeing your progress.

The parts count of the Heller/Airfix E-3s isn't that high. Unless you add scratch built parts like I have on the E-8 conversion (that I have yet to finish). You find more parts in your usual Hasegawa 1/72 fighter kit these days.

My recent projects have all being biggish, I once attempted a 1/72 KC-135 in a Blitz build! :) . I got it painted but not finished over the weekend. Took another couple of weeks to finish it.

Size comparison, this is the E-8 (built from the same kit) and a 1/72 Spitfire Mk1A

Oh my Lord; that's big! I have the E3 in the stash (thanks to Greg :-D ) but your pictures really put it into perspective!
Best wishes
