Matt's "Airfix" Buccaneer and "Matchbox" Phantom

From 1 April 1918, to present, celebrating anything RAF -- land, sea, air, person -- any kit, any scale, not whiffs. This GB incorporates the 617 Sqn/Opn Chastise 75th GB. Originally a 3 month GB, it is now super-extended through the rest of 2018. Part started kits will also be allowed to join.

Matt's "Airfix" Buccaneer and "Matchbox" Phantom

Post by mattbacon »

Well, finally got started on the first of, hopefully, a few contributions for SMW, to a personal theme of RAF '78. Although these two are predominantly CBKs, there are a few extra bits to help them out. But not half an entire CMK kit, I'm relieved to say!

Image
You know the score: bench, bits and large appropriate mug of beverage (other tipples may appear from time to time.

Image
Some bits to help out the Matchbox Phantom, courtesy of a friendly BritModeller and Hannants. Fujimi canopy and better rocket pods and resin cast of Esci radome, for reasons which will become obvious. Plus a couple of vac form canopies in case the Fujimi doesn't work out.

Image
And this is why we need the resin radome. The original Matchbox one is too short and small in diameter. The later "corrected" version adds the extra length but not the diameter and changes the shape, so looks even odder, as far as I can see...

Image
Starting to fit big bits together. To absorb the new radome, the Phantom top seam needs to be shimmed out about 0.5mm, and to fit the Fujimi canopy, a similar amount is needed at the top behind the canopy, tapering away to nothing a few cm further back. The gap under the front of the nose is a bit wider, because I've flared the front corners with a bit of brute force to form the basis of the downward bulge ahead of the wheel well on the real thing.

Image
Which results in this.

Image
And this

Image
Handily, the circumference of the circular compressor faces on the bulkhead buried in the fuselage and the length of the oval rim of the intakes is pretty much identical. So I made up a couple of tubes out of thin plastic card and glued them to the compressors, and then squidged them between the fuselage halves when I put them together, and blended them with a bit of filler. Not perfect, by any means, but a lot better than they'd look as Airfix intended.

Image
Nose jobs. The Bucc is getting a Freightdog resin nose and tailplane: they were easy to find and not expensive, and save a deal of fiddling about!

Image
And finally for tonight, the crew has been recruited, and are pretty much ready to board. Shame their aircraft are not ready for them, but they are going to have to wait!

M.

Great to see you doing some kitbashing Matt. The shape of the Phantom is very much improved. I think make a replacement nose and tailplane for the Bucc is a right of passage for every resin manufacturer. Years ago I bought some Final Touch ones but they were worse than the kit parts.

Well done on the MBox Phantom corrections. I had planned to go that route myself. So the Fujimi canopy did fit?

Well, first of all, apologies for radio silence... life stuff, job stuff, holidays and general lack of Mojo have all contributed to the glacial pace. And, if I'm honest, general intimidation and lack of recent practice at building 1.72 CBKs... the fit, the sanding... ohhhh, the sanding. It's been a good few years since I built a kit that required more than a smidge of filler, and one round of sanding it, and these are... not like that. I think the end is in sight though. Which is good, since I want to be ready to paint this weekend!

Airframes with mods and extras are together...

You can see the improved profile of the Phantom, and from the top how much "beefier" the front end is thanks to the various shims and fillets (the BIG one is on the bottom...)

..and finally for now, I'm convinced that the pilots will fit in under the canopy, and the canopy will fit the reworked front fuselage. Which is a relief after all that...

With luck, the next update will be a bit more timely!

You can really see the benefit of the Fujimi canopy. I'm sure you can get them both done in time.

Great to see this pair back on the go, Matt and the additions/corrections to both are making all the difference. A sound bit of work, chap and I bet you've secretly missed the fun filled world of fill, sand, repeat, when building olde worlde aircraft kits ;-)

Nice builds mate, I've just built the same Phantom not long back and done a simular job to the nose but I used the Doplar Nose that the A&AEE Phantom was fitted with:

Good to see you back Matt, the Phantom looks a great improvement over the stock kit. I'll have to wait to see them at Hudds/Halifax in Feb. Good tip on the Bucc intakes too ,I've been trying to pick up the Bucc update parts for a good while . I'm not prepared to sell a kidney for them though.
