Matt's "Airfix" Buccaneer and "Matchbox" Phantom

From 1 April 1918, to present, celebrating anything RAF -- land, sea, air, person -- any kit, any scale, not whiffs. This GB incorporates the 617 Sqn/Opn Chastise 75th GB. Originally a 3 month GB, it is now super-extended through the rest of 2018. Part started kits will also be allowed to join.

Reasonable progress this weekend, in parallel with a home visit from not-so-small daughter for Bonfire Night and much cooking...

Little guys installed. the Airfix Bucc comes with decent cockpit decals, and the ModelDecal set I have for the Phantom has good panels as well.

First time with Hataka lacquers, and very good they are... DSG on the Bucc...

I screwed up the Bucc at first, being unable, it seems, to read a shaded black and white painting diagram. Second time around, I realised that the Xtradecal set I'm using has incompatible four-views: the wrap-around camo just CAN'T join up the way they it is drawn. So, I busked it a bit... The Bucc will be in 12 Sqn Fox Head markings with Martels; the Phantom is going to be in 92 Sqn Silver Jubilee colours...

best,
M.

They look wonderful. Did you mask the camo job or freehand it?

A great looking pair, Matt, they are really shaping up very nicely indeed.

Thanks, guys. The camo was brush painted in outline and roughly filled in, then overcoated with the airbrush to make it more even. I figured that was the best way to get sharp demarcation and quickly. No new pictures, but I’ve brought them to Paris with me, and last night I got the decals on the Phantom. The Modeldecal set is comprehensive to a fault. Stencilling an F-4 in 1/48 was bad enough, and my eyes were bugging after 2 hours with this little’in... At least the Xtradecal Buccaneer set only has the main markings and a handful of bigger stencilling...
Best,
M.

I’ll be checking that stencils 50 thru 75 are correctly position before it’s eligible for display

Lovely. Well done and, just by looking at that pic, I would not have guessed that was the Mbox that Phantom.

Wow! Top work on both; they certainly look far better than their heritage should allow!

The impromptu decal demo on the Phantom went down well with the punters. Both were great additions to the display.

First rate job, Matt, that is a great example of how oldies can be polished up very nicely indeed in the right hands!
