Check's second S & M Models, Provost T.1 in 1/72 *Finished*

From 1 April 1918, to present, celebrating anything RAF -- land, sea, air, person -- any kit, any scale, not whiffs. This GB incorporates the 617 Sqn/Opn Chastise 75th GB. Originally a 3 month GB, it is now super-extended through the rest of 2018. Part started kits will also be allowed to join.

Check's second S & M Models, Provost T.1 in 1/72 *Finished*

Post by Chuck Finley »

I still get disturbed images in my head whenever I open a S & M model. Well, in any case, my second RAF subject for December is a Hunting Provost T.1 by S&M Models in 1/72. The aircraft will be built from the box as XF690 in standard training scheme of silver with yellow identification bands.

I have a Matchbox kit in my stash that will now be off to one of my 6th students. I have a tradition of giving everybody in the school model club, that I sponsor, a model from my personal stash of kits. I have one girl who has already build a new Airfix Spitfire Mk.I and Mig-15. So, I am thinking about giving her something a little more challenging for the holidays. ;-)
On second thoughts, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place!

Nice idea with the school modelling club, and I hope this build does not add to your S & M nightmares!
Best wishes

Good to see you back in the GB with another build, Chuck. Youngsters building models is sadly all too rare these days and it's great to read that you are encouraging some participation!

I am currently in the middle of finals week at the school where I teach and haven't had as much time to build as I like. That said, here is my progress report.

The pleasure: It is a detailed kit of the Provost and has a decent cockpit.

The Pain: There are heavy sprue gates that require careful clean-up and is similar to a Valom or A-Model kit in the building. As I expected, there is a lot of sanding and fitting.

All in all, it is better detailed than the Matchbox kit but I have a feeling the older model is a more pleasurable build without the pain.

Off to a very good start, Chuck. Undoubtedly this will make up into a nicer replica than the Matchbox effort due in no small part to the much better cockpit detail and the nicer engraving of the model surfaces - this kit is probably like comparing Airfix's new and old tool kits, the oldies can be more enjoyable to build as they are usually less complex and there is often more wriggle room with the fit of the parts during assembly. That said I have so far found the new tools result in better looking models than their predecessors and are therefore worth persevering with despite experiencing patience sapping issues with every one that I have built so far!

I have finished painting the yellow stripes. Tomorrow, the masking will begin and a nice coat of Testors gloss black applied in preparation for the aluminum finish.

Finished applying the alclad Aluminum paiint this morning and had a problem with peeling. Fortunately, I was able to solve the problem and finished the build and ready to begin the touch-up. It's almost as if "The Spanish Inquisition" was lurking about! *Starts looking around*

On a side note, the two P-40s in the background are the recently released Kittyhawk and P-40N from Special Hobby. The Kittyhawk is being completed as a P-40E from either the Phillippines or Java in 1942 and the P-40N will be the personal mount of Lt. Dan David or as he was more famously known, Dan Rowan of the comedy team of Rowan and Martin.
