So sorry to hear this Jim. So sad when this happens to a four legged family member.

All the best.

Thank you again for your thoughts.
We took Patch to the vet this morning, who were absolutely brilliant throughout and who gave us the time to say goodbye to our faithful old boy with dignity and peace.
Patch will be missed by a lot of people, not just by Ann and I, as he was such a character so we know his memory will be with us for a long long time to come.
Jet and Jasper have been looking for him all evening, and are certainly aware something is different but they will get used to his absence a lot quicker than we will I suspect.
Best wishes

Jim

I'm so sorry to read this, i know what i feel like when our Olive is poorly, Its never easy because they become such treasured friends, they give and receive love and affection unconditionally and become a member of the family. So sorry. Markh.

After a couple of sad stories from iggie and Mark I though I'd share something a bit more positive. As a number of you know I'm going through Chemo at the moment and whilst so far it's easier than first time round it still knocks me out and catches me out with the odd side effect. This is where our dog comes in. He knows I'm not well, I think he smells the excretion from my body and when I'm suffering a bit he comes up and snuggles down next to me. Last night was a classic, I was suffering from bloatedness in my sleep, he normally sleeps in his basket but he came up onto the bed, pawed me, then rested his head on my chest then settled down. As the bloatedness turned into nausea, he was there again, pawing me which I took as a signal it's time to get up which I did, got into the bathroom in the nick of time and saved an embarrasing mess.

This is how pets become part of the family, they are aware and in their own way they want to care for us as we care for them.

A wonderful and heartwarming tale, and I've got a bit of grit on my eye (again) after reading that.
Dogs are indeed very intelligent (on the whole, although there are certain breeds that seem to have missed out ;-)) and can certainly pick up on all sorts of things. When Ann is teaching online, Patch used to sit under the desk to be near her. Yesterday, Jet did exactly the same, having never ventured under the desk every before even when Patch hasn't for some reason gone under it. She knew that Ann was missing Patch and went to keep her company...
Best wishes

Yes, a lovely story, I think there is so much we don’t fully understand about dogs; what we see them demonstrate is probably only a small part of how they think and process things.
While they are protective of their food in their bowl and warn each other if another gets too close, they just love to care, they have an unbounded attitude of care for each other and for their master and other family members. When our last old boy wasn’t feeling well, Olive would climb in bed beside him, I thought that was lovely, and Wokkas story is quite beautiful too. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and views.

Thanks Stu, the side effects were far worse first time round but I do get caught sometimes. I'm on my third cycle out of four then it's a chat with the medics as to the current state of play.

I’m sure we all are thinking of you, please accept my apology for not asking how YOU are, until this post this morning I had no idea that you are unwell. Thinking of you my friend.

Unfortunately our beloved Monty passed away this evening. I was by his side. So long, Best Boy. Chase some squirrels.
