1/72 Antonov AN-10/12 Shared Build **Open**

Post by VickersVandal »

Well komrades, the time is here to build big beautiful Antonov, da!

It starts from today and runs until such time as we are all built or the decision is made that it has run its course.

Prospective participants were myself, H-bomb, IronMan129, MarkyM607 and RayS but of course everyone and anyone is welcome to join us with a 1/72 kit of this beastie. The more, the merrier!

Please chime in with your 1/72 AN-10 or AN-12 box shots, sprue shots, progress shots, vodka shots....

Also, of course, banter and encouraging comments on others' builds.

I will start us off with my box shot for now. Sprue shots to come soon.

It's a big box for a big kit. As I posted in the chat thread, this template I made to show the final size of the model and how I have no chance of displaying it without some major modifications to my display space....

Here's mine, the Modelsvit boxing of the of what looks like Amodel moulds.
Image

with 4 nice marking options, with prototype and early production versions
Image

It's the first good look I have had at the kit since getting it and I was impressed with the decals sheet and the fact masks are supplied for the clear parts
Image

The sprues are bundled up snugly, what I do know is that the Amodel break down of the these larger kits is different, with lots of smaller sub-assemblies eventually coming together to make up the fuselage, wings, tail group , etc. How do I know? I started an An-26 some time ago (which I have not touched) which is in the sub-assembly phase at the moment.

There is a lot of plastic there

I will leave this buttoned up for now as I have a couple of smaller builds nearing completion that I must finished, I can't be distracted yet!

Looks great, Ray. Canopy masks are a nice addition! Not included in the Roden unfortunately.

Looks to be the same moulds as the Roden, too.

The decal options look good.

I'm undecided whether to use this "unidentified Ukranian air service" UR-CAG option in the kit:

Or this one, making my own decals:

Yes the Roden kit looks the same, may be all from the same moulds? I checked Scalemates but it did not link them.

Dirty white Antonovs, interesting! I wonder what the difference between the 10 and 12 are? The rear ramp perhaps?

Could be. I'm not enough of an Antonov buff to have studied it that deeply yet.

The dirty white Antonovs thing comes from my interest in post-communist ex-Soviet-military Han Solo style freelance mercenary pilots. The guys who carried UN food parcels, drugs and guns all in the one trip because that's what the customers were paying for.

Dirty white Antonovs (and Iluyshins) were, sadly, behind much of the civil war and terrorism driven misery in Africa, the Middle East and South America in the last 30 years.

So, I have made a start.

Firstly, this seemed fitting to usher in the build:

Image

It was as good as I had hoped, though to be honest a little weak in alcohol. Only 9.8% I like my Russian Imperial Stouts to be up around 12 or higher. Still, it tasted rich and delicious, so it's all good.

Well, there are a lot of bits in this model. I'm ignoring the instructions which put the landing gear as the first steps and going with the interior structures instead, as most would do I'm sure.

Not a lot done so far other than hit it with white in preparation for the tan/yellow of the cargo area. Most time has been spent cutting away and cleaning up parts.

Image

Image

Most AN-12 cockpits I can find look to be a grey or black. Some are that aqua/blue that the Russians used so much but I think I'll go with the grey.

Question: does anyone know what colour the interior of the landing gear bays should be? This is something I can't find a reference for. Is it the same colour that the gear struts and wheel hubs would be?

On that note, one fuselage half had the cargo bay area nearly entirely filled with flash
Now removed...

Another issue. The instructions call for 100g of noseweight. That is not a small amount

Image

Here's what 180g looks like. 100g is going to be a fair chunk of lead. I hope the nose gear is up to the job!

Image

Still, from experience with the A-10 recently, it's surprising just how much lead you need to weight these things down.

Wow that's a lot of weight!

I am actually considering building my other kit the AN-12BK-PPS ECM variant for 2 reasons.
1). We will have all 3 boxing's of the Roden kit
2). It will be alot of practice for when I decide to built the AN-12 Cub as I'll want that whole aircraft as open as possible.
