Re: TeeELL’s New ‘cubby hole’ (and 3D) creations.
The prototype replacement tailplane has been created.
I drew the profile at the join and another profile 25mm further out, using something called ‘loft’ I was able to join them this creating the basic shape.
I then added the rounded tip.
After that I drew the shape of the join between the tail plane and the elevator and saved the tw0 parts as separate entities.
This is the tailplane main body:
The weird shape at the wing tip is a function of the software limitations and, once printed, I will need to file and sand that section.
Taking the elevator drawing I added a line through the ‘hinge’ points around which I could rotate the design. I chose 20 degrees to off set it.
After that, it eas a case of re-opening the tailplane drawing and adding the elevator to it:
I need to add the hinge line/rotation point for the tailplane - in fact I will add a hole so I can use a steel pin to secure the tailplanes in place, deflected slightly.
Of course, this does depend on whether I’ve got the overall planform shape correct!

Witchcraft, pure and simple...
Best wishes

Re: TeeELL’s New ‘cubby hole’ (and 3D) creations.
Jim,
this is how the witchcraft worked for the above:
Step 1 is to mark the maximum dimension of the inboard section (43mm x 1.8mm) then create an aerodynamic profile.
Moving to a plan view, step 2 was to create guide lines for the leading and trailing edges of the whole tailplane
The point at which the outboard end of the tailplane ceases to be straight is 25mm out. Step 3 is a line joining the 2 sweep angles 25mm out and parallel to the inboard section. The line is used to guide the creation of the aerodynamic section. Although it looks like the first photo, this is only 16.5mm long and 0.8mm thick.
The ‘clever bit’ is to connect the 2 shapes - fortunately the CAD software does this using the ‘Loft’ tool. Select the ‘Loft’ tool and the 2 profiles and .. voila:

Re: TeeELL’s New ‘cubby hole’ (and 3D) creations.
The previous description excludes the wing tip construction.
Creating the tailplane and elevator is fairly straight forward using a cutting tool.
The line of the join between tailplane and aileron is drawn and by creating a ‘box’ which encloses the aileron the aileron can be cut out of the drawing.
That final image is saved and the drawing modified such that the ‘box’ now surrounds the tailplane, which is cut leaving the aileron which is saved separately.

Re: TeeELL’s New ‘cubby hole’ (and 3D) creations.
After all that effort creating the CAD drawing, I have seen that the leading edge of the tailplane is rounded so I will need to modify the original drawing to reflect that. Thanks to ‘theplasticsurgeon’ for sending me some photos of the FAW9 tailplane at ‘The Jet Age Museum’.
I hope to show you the revision later today.

Incredible amount of work going into the Javelin Tony.
This is going to be something a bit special.

Thanks Andy, I will try.Andy Dighton wrote: ↑March 17th, 2024, 9:58 am Incredible amount of work going into the Javelin Tony.

After some trial and error - the ‘Loft’ tool created a very confused result connecting the more rounded profiles, I have created something closer to the correct camber for the tail plane.
You can see the change in profile in the photo.
I only need to design one unit as the slicing software has a ‘mirror’ option which I will use.
I will get these printed tomorrow to see how they look. I must remember to add the fixing hole before I go to print.

This is fascinating.
My dad, who retired at the beginning of March, used to do pretty much this at his job. He worked at a metals manufacturing plant and would used CAD to tell machines where to cut and band sheet metal to make various parts and components.
I'm trying to convince him to use his skills to design parts for 3D printing. I'm going to share your demonstrations with him.

3D printer systems are so inexpensive now - and it is mastery of the CAD software that is the difficult bit.Softscience wrote: ↑March 17th, 2024, 2:44 pm This is fascinating.

The pivot hole has been added and the parts are being printed, I should have samples ready in about an hour.

The tailplanes have printed satisfactorily but I’ve not quite got the planform correct. I need to go back into Fusion360 and make the tips more rounded.
