Thanks Shaun. It is certainly becoming quicker designing these additional parts. Nevertheless, the proof of the pudding is in the printing! On Monday I will discover how well the parts print and how effective/easy the removal of the supports prove to be. I am now considering designing the fuel tanks as I think this model will represent the F(AW)9R as flown by 29(F) Sqn.

Always great to see what you have been up to. I've been in a bit of a limbo on the models, but often just drop into the forum to catch up. I am really interested in the advances in 3D printing, but won't be taking it up anytime soon.
So many models, so little time.

Re: TeeELL’s New ‘cubby hole’ (and 3D) creations.
Chuck,
it is a sensible attitude to take. I didn’t invest in my printer until I was sure I could master the CAD software, I spent about 4 months working on items in the CAD stage and, fortunately, have a friend who could print my parts. Only then, when I felt I could justify the purchase, did I invest in my Elegoo printer.
Whilst I am getting quicker at design, I still have a huge amount to learn - that will occur if/when I need to learn those skills. Trouble is, I am at an age where, if I don’t do a bit of work every week with Fusion360, I forget processes!

I’ve opened the intakes to a smidge over 9mm and installed the intake ducts/compressor faces and the lower airbrake parts.
I modified the CAD and print of the intake ducts to create a thin horizontal line to help with getting them level:

I have just set the printer going in order to see what the ‘Firestreak’ missiles will look like.

Three hours! That is how long it is taking for the Firestreaks to print!. However, I’ve popped some filler in the wing joints and filled a slight gap in one of the lower airbrake cut outs. I am still hoping to have the upper and lower halves together soon - MUST remember to put some weights in the nose. Best I go do that now.

From page 107 I determined that I needed 30gms nose weight, I’ve put 24gms in the upper half and if that proves insufficient I shall remove the lower half of the radome and fill that with the tiny lead disks I have.

The Firestreak missiles have been printed, washed and cured. I now need to remove them from their print supports - I’ve enough for a squadron of Javelins. I have some without seeker heads in case I can work out how to make transparent heads.

I believe that Bondic (uv glue) can be sanded and polished...I can vouch for the sanding bit, but I've not tried the polishing bit personally
Best wishes

I am thinking of popping some clear sprue in the lathe, turning it to shape and then polishing.

Pretty hard to get the facetted nosecone right. is there no way to print the whole Firestreak in clear resin?DavidWomby wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 8:02 pm

That’s a great idea David, but I am not going to buy clear resin just for a couple of missiles! Lol
Anyway,
this is how they have turned out:
The nose cones actually have the 8 facets
Just had a look at the kit supplied Firestreak - it isn’t too bad in fact.

I have started to button up the fuselage/wing halves. A slow process as I am working on achieving the best symmetry.

Re: TeeELL’s New ‘cubby hole’ (and 3D) creations.
It is normal for IR missiles to have a ‘noddy cap’ fitted over the seeker, the Firestreak is/was no exception. I am going to create ‘noddy cap’ shapes to fit the missiles I printed that were going to get lathe turned clear plastic heads. In addition, the Javelin had quite prominent red covers over the gun barrels, so I’ll have a go at those as well.
Photos of the buttoned-up fuselage tomorrow. The second upper/outer wing section has fitted very well and appears to be a match in section, so onlt a bit of filler required to fill the join

Just spent 5 mins redesigning one of the Firestreak drawings to include a ‘noddy cap’. I guess that’ll be a 3hr + print!.
