Swinging 60’s GB **FORUM CLOSED!**

Post by TeeELL »

I have been advised to start a new thread for this suggested GB.

In the 1960’s designers were adopting the ‘swing wing’ or variable geometry concept for aircraft to address the need for high lift at low speed and low aspect ratio and t/c ratio for high speed flight.

Aircraft designed prior to 1960 were:
Me P1101 of 1944
Bell X5 of 1951
Grumman XF10F Jaguar

Aircraft on the drawing board of the ‘swinging 60’s’ include:
Mirage G
F111
F14
Tornado
Su 7B
Su 17
Su 24
MiG 23
Rockwell B1
Tu 22
MRCA

The Tu 24 didn’t reach ‘drawing board status’ until 1972.

The GB would include any of the ‘swinging 60’s’ list plus aircraft developed from them, such as the ADV, MiG 27, Su 20/22, F111 Raven etc.

Throw the idea into the ring to see what folk think!?

I have a couple of Revell 1/72 Tornadoes in the stash plus a 1/32nd Italeri and possibly another big Revell as well.
Best wishes

I have a Matchbox Tornado in the stash. This would be a good excuse to finally get it built.
Best wishes

Don't forget the Boeing 2707 supersonic airliner proposal - Monogram did a kit, which, while uncommon, is still available on auction sites:

Revell also did a kit:

Sure Paul. It didn’t feature on my search but it is definitely a contender.

I would be in with the Comet 1/72 TB1 if this was allowed...

I think that the swingwing era was so short, we might consider letting any and all in as allowing the Tu-160 et al (and TB1!!!!!) would not make the list that much longer. I do have a TU-160 in 1/33 but would probs be more in with the Revell F-111A/B (just need to find/make a new canopy for it....
Please critique my posts honestly i.e. say what you think so I can learn and improve...

Well, Thunderbirds was aired for the first time in 1965 so - why not?

Whilst I am aware that the list of options is relatively small, I would suggest that the variations within that list make it much larger
Eg MiG-23, -23B, -27
Tornado GR1/4/ECR/ADV
Su-17, -20, -22
And so on

The Tu-160 didn’t make the cut as it is an early 70’s design.
(As an aside, the Tu-160 could be built as part of the current ‘Named after Animals GB’)! ;)

I've always been fascinated by early Soviet designs and coupled with the fact that I've never built a Mistercraft kit (but have heard some very bad things about some of their output) means I would be game for a laugh with a Su7 or 17 or MiG 23 or 27 or some such so count me in.
