“Caricature” Kit Shared Build Sign-up, Chat, etc

Post by JohnRatzenberger »

Building off Flakmonkey’s (Steve) Workbench Build of the Meng He177.

For “’toons, “eggs”, and others along the likes of easy-build, pre-painted, snap-kits for quick fun builds that are not scale replicas but caricatures of real world subjects and not fictional creations.

Any genre, any kit – air, land, sea, space.

Builds will be OOB in the sense that it is a caricature kit and does not require the modeler to identify/correct every perceived flaw, or decide to hack into a different variant. Paint and markings changes are OK, and not even necessary to be accurate (everything is technically a whiff). Minimum putty, if any.

By going with a Shared Build of what are really imaginary subjects, we reinforce the fun aspect by reducing deadlines and pressure. Rather than threads for each modeler/kit there will be a single thread for all which should help participation, maybe even draw in others. By going with these type kits, there is less need for frequent, in-depth updates with lots of pictures – have fun.

By SB Rules, participants will be limited to 6 active building (any number can chit-chat) at any time. Due to the nature of these kits, a week is probably more than required for one, so we’ll just establish a queue and when one kit is finished a different modeler can join in. If in the queue, keep an eye for when it looks like one is finishing and be ready to claim your slot. No opening a placeholder then wandering off for days/weeks.

SBL will be Steve (flakmonkey) and John (JohnRatzenberger).

It will start 1 May 2023 and end .... in a while.

This thread, in GB/SB Chat, will be the “HQ” for announcements, questions, queue management, etc, to keep the SB Workbench thread clear for modeling. We'll sort it out as we go.

Thanks John for the fine introduction. I shall, of course, be dipping my oar into the eggy waters, with this little beastie...

Image

Meng's lovely little Tiger II (with Porsche turret, no less) from their seemingly ever expanding World War Toons range.

Fun fact: I was today years old when I discovered that World War Toons is a game, and all the vehicles in the Meng range are faithful reproductions of the in-game armour.

As John has already pointed out, hostilities shall commence on Monday, May 1st. I have already selfishly grabbed a build slot all for myself, and so we have initial space for another five willing victims. Gentlemen, stake your claim by posting in this thread with a picture of your chosen kit. Let's get cracking, shall we?

I'll be in at some point, other GB builds, and real life permitting and this will be my victim:

I'm hopeful of finding some suitable BOAC or British Airways decals rather than using the supplied JAL scheme...
Best wishes

A good choice, and I'm wondering what level of persuasion it will take to convince you to use the beautiful JAL hummingbird scheme.

I have 3 kits, directly Steve's responsibility from his He177 build :)

My only "gripe" is no inflight option for the aircraft; I can leave off gear, etc, and borrow an old stand I guess.

Thoughts:
B-17 OOB. - will be my first for this SB
B-24 "artistically" hacked into an assembly ship.
Titantic as RMS Olympic in dazzle scheme, as I did the paper ship in a GB a while back. I figure I can manipulate the paper plans to the Meng kit size and use that for the dazzle pattern.

As an SBL, I'll not fill up the queue, plus I've got 2 aircraft in a GB already, but I do have the box out and will look at it carefully soon.

Meanwhile I must go peruse the catalogs for others.

One of the very few times I have ever been called "responsible".

I have been trying to secure a B-24 but it seems to be a low stock item over here. At some point during the mayhem I may dip in with a Meng Lancaster (in Tiger Force markings) or perhaps the World War Toons Matilda II, spaces permitting.

Hmmm, I think I understand ‘the rules’. As I understand it, the 3 current ‘interested parties’ can build at the same time? So, if I want to join with a Lancaster, I can - (although I really need to finish my Demon first). So I can join in a week or so, as long as there are only 5 others building concurrently?

Yes, Tony, you have it. Oops, except the "play list" is 6, not 3.

This sounded like fun - have lost all the egg types that I thought I had - possibly discarded them in a fit of constantscalitis...anyway, bored on night shift tonight and forked out for the Fujimi Chibi IJN Hiryu...
