Metropolis Maschinenmensch Maria, X-Plus, 1/9

Post by mattbacon »

This is the X-Plus kit, which goes together really well if you follow the instructions exactly. The only "gotcha" that got me was that you can't build the entire inner figure as a mannequin and then add the outer suit. Read the order of building in the instructions and follow it. The second leg has to be fitted in place AFTER the rest of the body and some of the suit has been assembled. You can still build the "dummy" and paint it first -- just make sure that leg is just press fitted when you do. It's very well engineered, so that isn't a problem. The body is Tamiya Gloss Black oversprayed with Tamiya Metallic Silver and a touch of Titanium Silver for warmth.

That's really impressive. The face is amazingly like the movie and the overall finish looks just right.

That looks superb. You've set a high bar for when I get around to doing mine.

Thanks, chaps! It was a lot of fun. The kit is really good as are the instructions. So most of the “challenge” was getting a convincing finish, doing the built-in lighting, and then my first “dark background” photography. The camera was on a tripod, and this is an EOS70D which has a “live shooting” mode which shows what the picture will look like and lets you control the setting from the rear touch screen. It’s a 100mm macro lens, and I kept the aperture quite wide to make sure the background was blurred, then took the shutter speed up and down to get the look I no wanted. I took the white fronts off the soft boxes and only used the front tubes to give a harsher contrast light and minimum illumination of the backdrop. The most striking ones, with the shadow, had the main lights off on one or both sides and illumination from a hand held led torch.
Thanks again!
Best,
M.

The effort shows, the B&W photo is very evocative. Maybe try a film grain filter?

I could play with this for hours (Analog Efex Pro 2), but I'd better not:
