200 tons or that equates to 200 kegs of wine? That was the size of the Dutch fluyt Mayflower. My father was of German descent BUT his grandmother was English, she had great great great grand parents on the Mayflower in 1620. I have a small scale model of the Mayflower, Lindberg kit, but would really like to do the John Of London.Gregers wrote: ↑October 2nd, 2023, 12:14 am Hi John,
From the looks of drawings of the ship it does indeed look roughly the size of Mayflower. I am not a ship guy as such, more ww2-80's aircraft to be honest. This has, however got me intrigued if I get some time spare this week I will ry dig up some more info.
All the best
Greg

No expert (w/o dragging books off the shelf), but you are about right. 200 "tonnes" was the equivalent of 200 kegs/barrels of wine (or whatever) and was a standard measurement of the time which has carried forward to this day, confusing most of use us, or at least me.Britwit wrote: ↑October 2nd, 2023, 3:39 am

The old english word for barrel is 'tun', hence pubs called 'the three tuns' and 'tun dish', a bowl for catching drips from tapped barrels...

And you are correct, which is why I should have pulled a couple books off the shelf before responding earlier, but I at least admitted my confusion up front. I think (here we go again) “tuns” morphed into “ tonnes” etc …

If you were riding down a bumpy road on your bicycle with a basket full of oranges on the handle bars how many oranges would you have when you got home?
