What to use to build up an area on the surface of a resin kit?
I haven't had to do this before but a short run resin kit I bought needs a surface area about 1mm by 20mm built up to a depth of 1-2mm.
Please, please, don't say Milliput - I just can't get it to work for me. Any other suggestions, please? I am assuming getting it to adhere permanently to the resin surface rules out my usual solvent putties and PPP. How about 2-part car filler (Bondo over here and used to be Plastic Padding over there).

Mix some superglue (aka CA) and talc into a paste and shovel it in
It hardens fast so you need to work fast. As it starts to set you can trim it with a sharp knife. Once its really set its very hard and needs sanding back

Al speling misteaks aer all mi own werk..
Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Sorry not to have thanked you, Fred. You say 'shovel it in' but there is no gap to fill in this instance. I will be building up a relatively flat surface area. Will your mixture bond adequately to that, do you think, please?
I did also post this on Britmodeller to see what range of alternatives might be suggested.

How about something like Araldite? Or two part wood repair resin?
Best wishes

It depends a bit on what you want to do after building up the surface. CA glue will not give a strong bond if subjected to shear stress (sanding parallel to the resin surface), so if your built-up area stands proud of the rest of the resin, then it might come off.
Araldite or other two part epoxy resins might well be better.

If it is flat consider gluing on plastic card.

Agree with James, a 20mm strip of 1mm wide card, however high you want it to be. Since one surface is resin, CA will do fine.

Thanks, James and John.
I should have been more precise in my description, everyone. The area isn't actually flat. It's the mould line along the length of this cylindrical fuselage. In places it sits a bit below the curve that it should have on the circumference. Hopefully this photo shows it.
Would it work then to build it up with a strip of plastic card CA'd along it then using a filler to complete the shape?

Microballoons and cyanoacrylate glue? My bottle of microballoons has lasted at least five years, and it's very effective if you want something that sands better than hardened cyano but fills gaps with no risk of pinging off...

Re: What to use to build up an area on the surface of a resin kit?
Have been there...
The reduced surface area may be part of the problem as well as they is limited area for any filler to 'grip' to. Also some resins also continues to exude long after they have technically cured and that can also affect getting anything to stick to it.
What I have done on the past is drill/saw into the gap to make it deeper and/or accept some extansion plugs so that a solid filler eg strip of card can be frictioned wedged it as well as also enjoying the benefits of any glue that will work.
On a broader vinyl surgace that needed building out I used a series of nuts and bolts drilled into the surface so that the filler formed and set around the head and shaft of the bolt to ensure that it wasn't going any place ever...

Thanks, Simon. I had wondered about putting something for the filler to grab onto.
