The kit in your stash that you're afraid to build!!

Post by iggie »

How many of us have got a kit (or several 🤔) in our stashes that were afraid to tackle? You know the one, it's been in there a good while, it looks fantastic in the box, gets rave reviews on all the usual websites, but....but...
For some reason, you just can't bring yourself to actually get it on the bench and get it built; it's rare...it's expensive... it's got resin/PE parts... it's huge/tiny... and all the other excuses we give ourselves for not cracking on and getting it built! :-D
So, my proposal for a GB would be that we each tackle a kit that scares the pants off us, and gain mutual support from others doing the same in a GB
Thoughts? ;-)
Best wishes

Jim

Great idea Jim. Top of my list would be my Tamiya 1/6th Honda CB750 Four. Believe it or not there is one on eBay the moment for £507.63 with £37.71 P&P from Japan. I didn't pay that for mine but the thought of stuffing it up still terrifies me. I even bought the correct Zero Boy paints for it at Telford several years ago so no excuse for not building it really.

I think the kits that scare me are the ones I want to put a lot of time into getting right. Yes that does include my fiddliest kits full of fine resin and PE, but mostly it’s the commitment in time.

For me there's two sources of fear

a) it's rare or expensive (not necessarily the same thing) and I'll botch it; or,
b) it's fiddly and complicated (either assembly or, more likely, paint scheme) and I'll botch it.

I like that!

I have a number of contenders for this and would definitely be up for it!

Hi, I think it's a great idea & I'd definitely be up for it depending on when it's going to be.
It was the Boeing GB that inspired me to overcome my fear of rigging & get cracking on that.
Hopefully, count me in ;-) .

A few, all humongous. Except one that's a vacform.
1/72 TU95
1/72 Saturn V
1/72 NB52 - X15
1/72 NB52 - Lifting body (this will be a conversion)
1/72 TR1a vacform.
Wouldn't want to tackle any of those on a group build that lasts less than a year or two 😂
Interesting idea for a group build though.

All the best

Oh, for sure there are some, first of all the 1/32 Mirage with different AM stuff. But, I normally don't finish a model within 4 weeks, even the small ones, one of the fear ones I would need several months.
Cheers

I think a longer-term GB time period would be in order!

I would agree with that, although I think two months is a practical time period, any longer and it becomes too strung out... ;-)
Best wishes

It’s going to have to be some heck of a challenging kit to slow iggie down.

If I had one that scared me, that I'd be careful turning my back on in the dark, it would be the Heritage Aviation 1/32 Vulcan...I think I'm on top of most of it but the WC Fields style nose gives me the heebies... If I could sort that, I'd probably be able to bang the rest out reasonable quickly so long as I don't run out of Bondo and angle-grinder disks...

Then the only issue would be where to put it as this home is way smaller than the one where it was started....
