Dirk's Matchbox F4FU 4 Corsair - Nostalgia Build

Post by Dirkpitt289 »

Hey there Model Maniacs. Welcome to my latest project. I was taking a trip down memory lane recently and was thinking of the kits I built back when I was a kid. What we would do is get our parents to buy us the model of our choice and we would run off to the basement or the garage. We would then tear open the model, build in and then head outside to play with them. This process would only take us a few hours at best. And we would pay with those models for hours, days and sometimes weeks before they broke. We had hours of fun doing this and we didn't have anywhere near the tools and other items we had today and yet it didn't matter. I decided I wanted to go back to these simpler times and see if I could manage the same amount of fun as I did back then.

So for this project we are going to go down the block to see my good friend, Mr Peabody and his partner, Sherman. We are then going to see if he will send us back to the year, 1977 in his "Way back Machine" for our next project. I decided on 1977 because it just seemed right for this project. You see we are going to build this next kit using only the tools and materials that were available to me and my friends at that time. We were only 10 years old and we didn't have all the fancy tools and products that we have today like air brushes, a biz-zillion different color paints, primers, other solvents etc. Things a lot of us take for granted today.

So back in 1977, the only things I had available were Testors products. Here are the tools, and only these tools for this build,

The paint, A Testors starter set with just primary colors

Testor Brushes (Worst brushes in the WORLD)

Testors Tube glue and hobby knife

The kit I chose was a kit that was readily available in that year, the Matchbox F4FU-4 Corsair (1972). This kit comes molded in two different colors. Dark Blue and Light blue

Stay tuned

Wow, that brought back memories. Only difference was I had humbrol enamel paints, which still exist in my toolbox today. I will enjoy watching you combine old world tools with modern day expertise.

Yep, similar experience for me, albeit with Airfix glass bottle paints and tube glue with mandatory strings and fingerprint technology...
Paint was, of course, optional ;-)

Best wishes

Agreed, I hardly ever painted anything when I was a kid.

That's sums up this experiment. Should be interesting considering the Testor brushes I'll be using...

No worries - are you going to include some photos of you running it around the garden when finished?

Get idea. Paint optional? The first model club meeting I went to in 1979 I proudly presented my Monogram P47-sans paint. I mean the plastic was the right color. That didn’t happen again.

Cool idea and project also 1977 would be alittle late for me as that was the time, when girls did get much more interesting then plastic models ... :)
Cheers

Great idea.

Just a comment: I still only use the tools and other items that I was using when I started conversions in c.1970, and like Iggie I still have some of the Humbrol pants from the late 1970's (camouflage colours)!. Prior to that I can relate to every other part of your story
