Got something to say about the hobby of model making?

Automobile Year Books of Models (1982-84)
It seems there are not many people other than me interested in these -- just picked them up for pocket change. Automobile Year was a high end yearbook of motor cars and motor sport which ran for several decades, initially in French and English and then just in French. These (in English) have the same sort of format. In depth articles on auto model related subjects (A Tour of Tamiya, Large scale metal models focusing on Revival, SE Finecast and others, a build of a big Pocher kit); a month by month review of the years releases in plastic kits and diecasts, with lots of colour photographs, and a bound in listing of all the years' releases by manufacturer on cheaper paper. They run 150-200 pages in all. It looks like only three years were ever published, and here they are... Worth a look if you're a car-modelling plastic kit or diecast historian, like me. In my case these cover the years where I first err.... discovered... girls so I wasn't paying attention to models and kits, and they fill in the blank in my memory nicely.

best,

M.

Been a while since anyone posted here - are we not acquiring books? :ha:

Well, I seem to be making up for that.... :-D

I bought a number of books while in England:

Image

The top two from the RAF Museum's giftshop that now has a secondhand book area. This had about 20 Putnam aviation books - I have many of those already but I couldn't remember which ones I didn't have and they were quite pricy, so I didn't get any. I'll take a photo of my Putnams book shelf before I next travel to Britain....

Two new books from The Works, the Concorde and Hurricane books which the manager said were brand new in. The Concorde book is a rather good read, though it does concentrate a lot on the crash which makes for some very depressing passages... The Hurricane book is rather disappointing as it's written for a very general audience, and the seasoned aviation enthusiast will not find much new or particularly interesting. Some of the generalisations and banalities are rather cringeworthy.... :-|

Three new books now that I've ordered since returning from England:

These are for a new, 'big' project. ;-)

And lastly, we stopped by our local library today. They have a small Friends of the Library book sale area; they often have a book or two of interest, but today I picked up these

Either someone was having a clear out or had recently died - they were all Ex Libris the same person..... In either case, for me a nice haul for $20...!

This is one for those of a certain age to remember when the RAF had dozens of types in Strike Command, pure nostalgia.
This one is the illustrated hardback edition, there's also a small paperback, also highly recommended

Here's another of my favorite books, it tells the story of a most unassuming man, Russel Adams, he was one of the greatest pioneers of aerial photography and his work with Glosters not only captured stunning images but also images that helped develop the aerodynamics of Gloster aircraft

More books from Friends of the Library:

From the same person’s collection. They must be putting out a few at a time - I’ll have to go back weekly…..

I rediscovered this one recently, it tells the story of Russel Adams, an unassuming man who pioneered aerial photography while working at Glosters,

Great story and even greater photography

I'll have to get a copy of that - I've seen it in the shops, however I haven't finished her previous book 'Tornado' yet.

Probably of limited interest on here but I love the Napoleonic period and my deepest hobby enjoyment comes from 28mm Napoleonic wargame figure painting, I'll never use them in a game but painting them puts me at peace.
Anyhow £34 pound reduced to £4 + postage which was £4.25 ! but it's a big book which I've wanted for years from:
https://www.naval-military-press.com/ check out the sale prices but he certain if it's hard or softback - very well packed too.

This is going to be the go-to book for one of my projects in the coming year:

Image

Nice book with some useful pictures of aircraft you rarely see in USAF livery, like the Black Widow and Thunderbolt.

One of my colleagues at work today looked over my shoulder as I was reading it on my lunch break and exclaimed 'this is just Penthouse for planespotters, isn't it, Bob?'. See what we're up against. ;-)

And yet again:

Image

The text on this one looks, like so many of Helion's titles, like the script for someone's History degree dissertation, but there are some nice and unusual pictures and if you model anything Turkish, you're always glad of something new.

I found out from the book that the Turkish Armoured Forces in WW2 used (at the same time):
British Vickers Mk.VIbs and Valentine Mk.iiis and IXs
German Pz.IIIs and IVs
French Renault R.35s
US M3 Stuarts and M4 Shermans
Soviet T26 model 1932s and T-26As along with BA-6 armoured cars

Apart from being a logistical nightmare, does that sound like a decent modelling project?
