Matt's CFK Mirage ***FINISHED***
Matt's CFK Mirage ***FINISHED***
A true Classic French Kit -- the Heller 1/48 B/C. This one will be a two-seater, just to be different...
Don't worry... I'm not jumping the gun. Just wanted to remind myself what was in here... The eagle-eyed will spot Messrs Tanguy and Laverdure lurking in here. The even more eagle-eyed will also notice a part from ANOTHER Mirage -- a horse of a very different colour.
bestest,
M.

Great choice. A classic French kit.

Re: Matt's CFK Mirage
And so we begin...
Job #1 with Mirages IIIs, in my experience:
From the online reviews builds of this kit I've read, the fit of the alternative 2-seater front fuselage can cause problems if you build it the way the instructions want, with the entire front "pod", including landing gear, slotted into place at the end. So I've fettle the joint and got two complete fuselage. The thing I've learned for myself is to fit the upper wings to the fuselage at this stage, so you get a solid join, and an easy to clean up seam, rather than filling a long, inaccessible, trench a lot further down the line. This way, the tricky join is behind the leading edge of the wing, and a LOT less conspicuous...
Just taped together to confirm it does actually fit, building it this way...
Just to prove that no matter HOW old you are, and how long you've been doing this, you can still get a sticky thumbprint in an annoyingly visible place! That will have to be dealt with. You can see, though, that there's no obvious gappage at the wing root. and a scrape with a sharp blade will take off the plastic bead.
And I give you, ladies and gentlemen...
The most irritating seam on the Mirage III. Every one I've built (at least in larger scales) would have you deal with this little beggar! It'll be fine with plenty of glue and some firm taping, but I bet we all will tangle with a pair of them at some point in the next few weeks...
Laverdure has had his head cut off so he can look sideways out of the cockpit, but no painting yet. And I've managed to find the French monograph that I was SURE was in the bookshelf somewhere with detailed walkaround pics of the IIIB and IIIC, including yet another all black cockpit!
bestest,
M.

Re: Matt's CFK Mirage
Great start Matt.
You seem to know more about Mirages than me (not difficult ) so perhaps you can answer this question:
Why do some Mirages have all black cockpits whilst others have a metalic green colour?
And how do you know which to use?

As far as I'm aware, if it's Swiss it has the metallic grey-green cockpit; if it's anyone else's it should be black...

Re: Matt's CFK Mirage
I've not finished mine... ;-(
Ejection seats getting a bit of dressing up. They'll mostly be filled by the pilots, but a bit of gizmology around the head box will help, I think!
More gizmology in the cockpit. It bears some slight resemblance to the real thing, but more importantly will look busy when painted and dry brushed in that black on black cockpit. The long stalks will be trimmed back to be smaller buttons and knobs when the glue has set firmly!

Re: Matt's CFK Mirage
Good tip about using pieces that are easier to handle and then trim back later, though it does look like it has sprouted tentacles.

Re: Matt's CFK Mirage
Getting there, OT... getting there:
Messrs Tanguy and Laverdure, before boarding their chariot of the air...
I'm not messing about too much with the main body of the seats, since it's hidden behind the pilots and deep in the dark 'pit...
The office, awaiting tenants.
Instrument panels, tricked out with our own Migrants decals. First time I've used them, and they're great, though a little hard to handle (the carrier film covers the whole sheet, so you have to cut them out individually, and get them to where you want on a paintbrush..)
Test fit. The pilots are going to need a bit of slimming down in their nether regions. The location of the instrument panels on the tub is not at all clear, so I think they'll be going in after the cockpit is in place, to match up with the parts that are moulded into the fuselage halves...
I should have it installed tonight... hopefully.
